The vast majority manage it. Though, that may not be an indication of contentment.

I agree that some are skilful at provoking ad hom. Deliberately or otherwise.

I prefer lack of rules and allowing the dynamic of a group of people to establish itself by mutual consent.

I take your point. Mutual consent would be ideal. There is no fun in moderating posts from people who are trying to game the rules. I've seen that work well on very small forums where pretty much everyone knows everyone and they have an unwritten understanding of what is acceptable and what is not. Members might like to suggest how it could work here.

I am particularly sensitive to any form of censorship. In the context of a forum it's a difficult and some may say impossible task to moderate the comments so they remain within the spirit of the forums ethos . We all want a free flow of expression and ideas without the fear of ridicule or abuse. Thankfully I can't recall a clear example of abuse on here. Re the question of rules, well some people will always seek to get round them and if they can't get round them then they attempt to subvert them. Using the LDA PSU thread as an example whilst the repetition of the time and the frequency reading was to my way of thinking not helpful only DQ knows whether he was trying to subvert the spirit of forum. I trust he wasn't and it was simply a way of over emphasing his point even though I thought his point was ill informed.
Finally I enjoy and appreciate my time on here and would like to think we can continue to enjoy exchanging ideas in a cooperative manner.

Well, size is of course subjective.

No, as you know I never believe removing threads or modifying them is the solution to this problem, but is a symptom of it. Allow a forum to behave as we do in the real world, you can't insult someone and then have it forgotten, or expect to behave like a arse and not have repercussion on how you are viewed by your peers, why would you want a forum to be different. You may say because this forum is attached to a commercial organization, and then I would say, that's the mistake, company forums will always fail, because of the conflicts we see here. If its commercial, then its a blog, and is different to a open forum. Different animals, different rules.
