Stu, its pretty decent. All the through hole board stuff has been done so it should last forever now. I might have at it with a few low noise regs around the iv and output stage.

Sony CDP-S1 arrived the other day. I tested it and it works perfectly. Not listened to it on my main system yet as my preamp is built in to my cdp. Well i say preamp, its just four resistors, a few bits of wire and two pairs of crappy phono sockets pulled from a dead amp.

I will have to build the equivalent of that and put it just behind the back panel of the Sony. It came with a 2 pin mains plug which must have been used to get mains from another part of the scala stack system. I put a screwdriver in the earth pin socket of an extension lead and then the 2 pin plug went right in to the other two holes. Bingo. Not a long term solution though.

Also it has a 2 pin mains socket for the tuner to get its mains AC. Dont need that of course. So at some point that part may get thrown in the bin. See what else can be thrown away

If you don't need the socket, don't use it :D I'd suggest it isn't going to do any harm at all sat sitting there on its lonesome ;) I've not looked inside mine, but I gather they're quite simple and the output chip is one shared with many of the cheaper Sony's. Not a criticism as I think the very slight extra warmth of tone can help some systems no end.

I'd like to see what the Tempo machine did that RD liked so much. Neat little player for £150 or so, but no idea how it compares with the Denon at similar money.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

I like simple  The dac chip in my CD3.5 is not highly regarded and was cheap as chips i believe. It does a grand job and drives the next stage admirably since i bypassed the whole of the output stage.

I will have a look inside at some point. I wonder what kind of output stage is in there and if everything has its own regulator that ought to have.

What model is this Tempo machine you speak of Dave ?

For anyone interested there is a summer sale starting at AliExpress in a few days with the Shanling Tempo EC1B CD Player dropping in price to around the 150 pound mark at one seller.

I'm keeping an eye on a couple of relatively affordable DAC's which have got me curious. :geek:

I think i have enough cd players now but i really like the usb input on these so you can play files from memory sticks. That is a very good idea imo.

Swore I would never buy another vintage CDP after my Sony ES gave up the ghost after a month.

But.........

Couldn't resist when this mint extensively refurbished one cropped up.

Imagevia Imgflip Meme Generator

Pros...
It sounds very nice.
It looks lovely.

Cons...
No remote control.
It has an open / close mechanism that would put Arkwright's till to shame.
