I'm currently using an Allo Boss V1.2 but am considering a stand-alone dac with a Pi Digi board.
Could you please give a bit more detail regarding the differences between the Digione and the Digi+ Pro - have you tried the Iqaudio Digi+?

Haven't tried the Iqaudio board.

Physically, the DigiOne replaces the Toslink socket with a BNC, and the Allo board is more expensive.

Soundwise the Digi+ PRO has a crystal-clear sound with lovely detail and space.
The DigiOne adds some weight and solidity to instruments, with a wider & deeper soundstage.

Both are excellent.

The Allo board can be further improved by adding the aluminium casing. This acts as one big heat sink for the Pi's main processor and smoothes out the SQ.

The above post is a classic example of hi-fi speak, what does it mean musically.

I understand the above perfectly well, the fact it is also more "musical" (whatever that really means) is a given for me.

I think Bigboy has been reading this. He is waxing lyrical and describing the SQ on AOS. Will it be another of his passing phases.

There has been big news on the tiny microcomputer front - there is a NEW MODEL: the Raspberry Pi 4.

Improved processor
Choice of RAM size
2x mini HDMI output (to 2 separate screens)
2x USB2
2x USB3
power via USB-C
Gigabit Ethernet

Image

Anybody tried one yet?

Also there is a new release of Volumio (Ver. 2.598) which includes support for the new model Pi4 and another attempt at the new Volumio3 UI. Got it running on one Pi installation and it is more stable than the previous test version. Still find it a lot busier than the 'old' screen. :geek:

Edit - switched back to standard UI. Missing the ability to shift to different sections of a track.

I've decided it's not worth my while using the Pi 4 as I already run a custom config.txt file which lowers some voltages and completely disables other parts of the Pi, like the HDMI for instance.
As far as I can see all I'd be doing with a Pi 4 is working harder to reduce it to the level I'm operating at now. The new Pi draws about 17% more power so I've been told. I can't see any sonic benefits to upgrading at the moment.

Volumio 2.599 is out. I tried it and abandoned it. The new Volumio interface was more fragile than Donald Trump's ego and it seemed to screw my YouTube plugin. If anyone else is having trouble with their YouTube plugin, by the way, there is a fix which I'm happy to put up here if required. It involves using Putty & SSH and if you don't already know what they are then you probably won't want to attempt the fix.

Exhausted after all that-
I started to think about a diy streamer as my ifi zen stream doesn’t have a display and pricing up a build soon adds up to more than the ifi with possibly not much improvement in SQ.
I have a rpi 1 - a b version and have experimenting with it using Volumio with usb out controlled by my iPhone. I bought an original wolfson audio sound card but the software to run it appears to be not longer working from element14 website- I then wondered if I could somehow link the ifi and a rpi to run a rpi as a standalone display - in my simple mind I think I would just split to Ethernet signal pre ifi - does any one know anything about using a rpi as a display device only- living in hope (shopping in chesterfield- 😂 for northerners only)
