Turntable s

Unread post by Latteman »

Hi guys
We had a recent topic on speaker isolation/ coupling so was wondering what your tables are supported upon.
I’ve had a variety of options over the years and depending on the turntable- eg my Townsend Avalon & Rock were on cut railway sleepers on metal based turntable table whereas the funk firm Vector was on a light metal wall support & glass shelf. My Thorens TD321 played on anything-usually an Mdf record storage cube. My current deck is (from bottom up) on mdf storage cube, thick rubber matt cut from a railway platform crossing, oak shelf, 3 heavy door stops supporting another oak shelf upon which is a large granite tile then the deck. Not sure why but it works
What’s your set up

Nothing special here, just a butchered £15 TT shelf from Gumtree that i welded and sprayed to look a bit more eye friendly, then added some spikes and a granite chopping board and finally a plywood base.
Does it sound better than being sat on a rack?
I think so, and certainly doesn't suffer from footfall.

Mine are on the floor. The EMT 950 comes with 2 substantial side panels that would have gotten it to desk height in the radio station.
The EMT 930, I tried it on my Sound Organisation turntable table that was essential equipment for my LP12, but it sounds better on the floor.

I site my turntables well away from my speakers. 9 metre speaker cable lengths required.

I would love to get my TT on to a dedicated wall shelf but that's not going happen. Instead, it sits atop the, dare I say it?, RACK, with a 20mm thick black acrylic top. I messed around with all sorts of feet from spikes to soft sorbothane, wood, hard rubber etc, etc but actually finished up with correctly "tuned" springs. Seems to work ok.
Audio Grail "Sable" Garrard 401 with Cumbrian Green Slate plinth / Audiomods 6 / Benz Micro Gullwing SLR, Phono 2, NVA INT400sa. (Oh and a Copland CDA823 CD Player, for when I fancy a bit of the devil's spawn!)

I'm sure it's fine, but please don't assume that mass loading a lightweight deck like this is the best route, as the bass 'musicality' suffers badly with this deck if the siting's not ideal. If you haven't done already, why not try a light rigid 'shelf' in between either spiked or otherwise decoupled from the rack underneath, listening to the 'tunefulness' of the bass as you do so. The best for an older Rega was always their wall bracket in my experience.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

I’ve recently looked at the current range of rega wall supports and believe they would fit other brands but as usual are over priced- I cut up an old sound organisation tube steel table and bolted it to the wall- love recycling

WAF to consider and I'm not very good with DIY.
I do not play a lot of vinyl, it is well away from the speakers and the bass sounds ok to me.
