SUMMER'S LEASE

a 90s UK drama, 4 episode miniseries.

Brit. family takes a Tuscany villa for the summer and the wife becomes fascinated with the existence of the absentee owner.

Pretty good.

Same idea of Brits leaving rainy cold Limeyland for vacation under the lazy Tuscan sun was in two other series: one with John Thaw (Morse) and another truely excellent one with the wife of Lawrence Olivier.

I've had 30-odd private em's asking for the name of this "excellent" Tuscan holiday mini-series.

It is "Enchanted April" '92 with Joan Plowright,Micheal Kitchen (prog luver),Miranda Richardson and Jim Broadbent.

Will check that out, Fret.
Never heard of it.

Oooops! The only "Maelstrom" DVD the local library has is French and 2001.

.................................

Lots of Brit series are impossible to find here. The educational station out of Toronto used to play them all the time but last two years has been a drought - seems its too costly to buy the right to air them. (Also it appears BBC charges tv stations same amount for a brand-spanking-new series as it does one from the 80s!)

The Buffalo (US) educational channel is excellent for Brit series but they play only the recent ones -all detective - which I don't particularly enjoy: Vera, Shetland,Coroner,Broadchurch....

STONES

'70s UK was interested in stone circles and laylines anorl.
Quite a few films made on this theme (not to mention a prog lp or two). Probs the best being The Stone Tape.

Cocksucker-Minister of Tourism wants to move Stonehenge to Hyde Park, but the Stones think otherwise. Good acting doesn't help a mediocre plot.

THE MISSING POSTMAN (UK, '90S?)
This is the kind of Brit series I really miss - no mystery, no murders, no fucking chases. (Well...alright ,there is a chase. But not your usual.) A simple, light drama-comedy. BBC made things like this in the 80s/90s but ,of late, this has become an endangered species whereas fucking stark American-violence-influenced series are becoming the norm for BBC (outside of their period dramas - which will always be a hallmark for BBC).

Devoted postman ,delivering mail via bicycle for past 35 years, gets retirement package forced on him even though he is 50. The post was his whole life. On the conclusion of his last delivery he decides to make one final epic run: deliver certain mails to far-away villages, by hand. He pedals his bike as far as Scotland.

In time he becomes a sort of almost urban myth, with folk spotting him and reporting the encounters to the press.
The police are being made fools of since the old gaffer keeps evading them. Afterall he stole the Royal Mail - even though he IS returning it, envelope by envelope.

Folk are making him into a hero, a beacon for cast-aside working class who have been retired/remaindered (often by competiton from machine-labour). A revolutionary who refuses to give up to the system.

But it could not be more different: the Missing Policeman is a non-descript, gentle person of no political affiliation. There is no cause. Just one last go.

THE SHOUT ( '79 UK) Great cast -Susannah York & Alan Bates (weren't they in "Far from the Maddening Crowd"?). John Hurt, Robert lindsay,Tim Curry, award-winner Jim Broadbent (but here he has no lines - just plays a cricket-playing lunatic at an asylum.) I only wanted to see this because HOT FOX Carol Drinkwater is supposed to be in it, but I only seen her for ONE FRIKKEN SECOND. maybe they cut out some of the film???

From a strange short story by Robert Graves (Didn't he write the superb, "I, Claudius"?)

Bates, a mystic wanderer who has the power (from his aborigional past) to shout creatures and man TO DEATH also possesses power to have Hurt's wife,York, fall stupefied in love with him. He takes over Hurt's beach cottage saying his "music" is shit. Hurt has a studio where he is producing strange sounds - I see TWO EMS VCS3's. I would kill to have one of them.

Oh yeah, music is by Rutherford & Banks (Genesis)!

They say this is a well-acted/made film, but its a total bore. Lotta zigzagging in the sand dunes. I only rate it for the VCS3's and Carol HotFox.
