BEATLES THE wHITE aLBUM
Re: BEATLES THE wHITE aLBUM
I quite like the rambling nature of the album. OK, there's some average tracks (and for my money Revolution 9 shouldn't be on it), but you're never more than a couple of tracks from something great. Side 2 has I'm So Tired, Blackbird, and Why Don't We Just Do It In The Road; which is 3 great tracks more than a lot of sides of music have.
I've got a repress from about 2000 (which sounds as bad as the 80s CDs), and the mono from the box set 5 years ago (which sounds good, but I prefer the stereo mix), so it looks like I'll be getting a 3rd copy soon.... Don't think I'll bother with the demos etc.

Re: BEATLES THE wHITE aLBUM
I was introduced to the album at a young age by an older friend who often brought it round when we played subbuteo. He would skip Revolution 9 as I often do. I like the variation, While my guitar gently weeps being my favourite track. It was intended that O bla di be released as a single, but Lennon would not have it. The Marmalade took it to the top of the charts. Side three is heavier than anything else at the time. McCartney responded to claims that the Who's i can see for miles was the heaviest song at the time and came up with Helter Skelter. The saddest thing about the album is the misinterpretation by Charles Manson.

Re: BEATLES THE wHITE aLBUM
Is this a joke or do you genuinely not know what you are talking about? "The Long and Winding Road' isn't on The White Album...on any of its 4 sides.Mississippi Blind Child Assburn wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 4:19 pm My christ-fucked computer is freezing-up every 2 minutes, so forgive my mistakes.
Now if anyone at all is reading this thread, doubtless you're thinking: 'But Blind Child! W.A. does NOT end strongly on side 4. Dammit it ends with the slurpy "Long And Winding Road"!"

Re: BEATLES THE wHITE aLBUM
The pre 2009 copies are the same digital source as the 1987 CD. DMM. Not as bad as some of the other digital transfers. The 2012 digitally remastered stereo currently available is at least an improvement although it sounds as if they changed EQ quite a bit. The mono from the box is excellent and of course there are some notable differences in the Mono. I have a mid 70s unnumbered pressing that uses the first tube cut stampers for 3 of the 4 sides and that is an excellent sounding copy. There is a new vinyl version coming but based on Giles Martin having remixed it I am wary of the results. Might be worth the 4 disc version for the demos included.Ed345 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 10:50 am I quite like the rambling nature of the album. The album is certainly a mixed bag and Revolution No 9 should have been excluded or at least edited to make way for some more George Harrison material. He still didn't get a fair crack with 4 sides available. Still there are some great tracks including Blackbird, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Helter Skelter. It appears pretty unfocused with the band members doing their own thing but somehow forms an interesting if sprawling effort. If someone stood up to Lennon it would have been better especially as he was losing interest at this point. Why TF didn't they chuck Yoko out? Pretty much everyone would walk for a time after this point apart from Macca who appears very much in charge by default from this point on.

Re: BEATLES THE wHITE aLBUM
I think the Let it be film provides some insight as to the atmosphere and tensions during the recording of the White album. The writing was on the wall following the decision not to tour and the death of Brian Epstien which were linked. He felt he had no purpose and being gay at that time did not help.
