Missed them this time round. Saw them a while back (minus Hugh of course) and they were good. Seen Hugh solo a few times. He usually sticks in some of the 'old' (to him) stuff.

The Rolling Stones put on a great show last night. Timeless classics from Street fighting man at the start until Satisfaction nearly two hours later. Jagger was as lively as he was the first time I saw them nearly thirty years ago. He had done his local research and had the audience in the palm of his hand. There will never be a front man like him and the rest of the band were really enjoying it. A lot of under 30s in the audience, some going ape. A great night and worth the money.

My festival season has come to an end so it’s back to the usual venues until next year. Last night it was Jonathan Wilson at Gateshead’s Sage Hall 2. After a long summer stint in Roger Waters tour band, Jonathan's promoting his recent album Rare Bird’s with a short series of gigs in the UK. Blues, Country, West Coast Rock, Psychedelic, it’s all in there. Really got into this last night, thought the album was decent enough but it really shines when played live. They threw a few oldies in and also a superb cover of Bob Welch/Fleetwood Mac’s Angel. Thought I’d mention it as the band have a few UK gigs left before they are off in Europe. Well worth seeing.

As a member of the modern music is terrible camp I braved the storm to see From the Jam last night. Bruce Foxton is the only original member and he was enjoying himself. A rousing finish with A town called Malice, Eton rifles and Going underground. Nice to go back to the days when good music could top the charts.

Over three months with no one worth seeing coming to Cardiff and now two in consecutive nights. Was impressed by Europe supporting Deep Purple last year and had to see them playing a full set in a smaller venue. It was a good evening. No prizes for guessing the song they finished with.

Sage Gateshead again recently to see and hear Wooden Shjips, described in one review as 'space-lord wizards of a thriving psych-rock scene' I arrived prepared for an entertaining evening. Not expecting to see too many punters at this one as I thought they are fairly obscure, the place was rammed. Spent the first half of the show at the stage front for the support act, cant recall the bands name but they made up for the lack of technique with a very enthusiastic and extremely loud set. Bit of a schoolboy error on my part as the old ears were buzzing for the rest of the night.
Wooded Shjips reminded me of 'Moon Duo' who I had seen a few years ago at a festival and enjoyed them enough to buy one of their CD's. Was only later that I found out the Lead Singer / Guitarist is the same bloke!

Know them both and like them. But nearly every song sounds like the one before.

Anna Calvi - Newcastle Boiler Shop

One of Newcastle's many great venues, the Boiler Shop is a grade 2 listed building which was originally built by the Robert Stephenson Company as the worlds first locomotive factory. As you can imaging its a large hall and retains many of the early building features. It's a cracking venue and gets a lot of established bands.
First time I've seen Anna Calvi, she's quite the enigmatic performer and an accomplished guitarist (she is also tiny). Shades of Jimi Hendrix complete with her indy rock and at times operatic style vocals made for a entertaining evening. Jimi wasn't adverse to writhing on the floor 'avec la guitare' and nor was Anna. Made all the more interesting as the band didn't have on-stage monitors using in-ear phones instead. She was literally 2 feet in front of me, I couldn't help but think at the time, 'hows she going to get back on her feet without losing her chic cool? Have to say she pulled it off - impressed!

Back in time again last night to see Glen Hughes Performing Classic Deep Purple. His voice has stood up to the ravages of time better than Gillan and Coverdale. The band are really up to it, with the solos you would expect from Purple. A couple of classics were included from the Mk2 era as well. Some fond words about Tommy Bolin. I think they would have had a lot more to offer but for his death. It was a sell out and there is clearly a big demand for the 70s. Got my ticket to see Steve Hacket performing Selling England by the pound in full next year.
