NVA doing a NVA BMU Bake-off

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

Playing with a comparison between no BMU - miniBMU - BMU.

System CD player into my cheap chinese dac, into P90sa into the traded in mk1 A80s. TSCS speaker cable, SSP interconnect, Cube 2 speakers.

No BMU = irritating, driving me mad, sometime good, sometimes as though I am fighting to hear through to the music, normally with a sense of relief after 10pm it starts to sing.

miniBMU = better, when connected to the starter system or smaller amps or just the CD player it does the job, the music opens up more. BUT the effect of my fecking awful mains is still apparent just not as bad. BUT with the bigger power amps I still get the feeling I need something more.

BMU = bliss, problem gone. Now across the day variation in my musical pleasure has dropped to a background sort of might be problem instead of me knowing it is there and irritating the hell out of me.

The more I play with this business of mains the more I realise how bad mine is, this is what has motivated me to explore it and look for cures and reasons.

BTW none of this is to do with buzzing transformers, that is a separate issue - this is all about music and what the BMU does to it.

Hi Doc, I have been using my mini BMU for just over a week now the effect in my system seems to be overall, every aspect seems more relaxed instruments are easier to follow and the whole sound seems to be improved, I actually sat and listened to a couple of cd's in a row which is something I would usually avoid. I have a fairly small power amp though so that may well be why it works so well . My whole system is plugged into it by the way (I ordered a six way) I am a happy man! (for now)

The BMU was the first Item of NVA kit i bought. SQ was varying a lot at different times of the day and it was really getting to me. I thought the mains was the most likely explanation. With the 30 day return option I had nothing to lose and thankfully this major problem was solved. This set me off on the NVA route. LS6 soon followed and then the boxes. :)

Davjam - It varies from system to system depending on how good the system is and how bad your mains is. My mains is terrible. This is why it is a must to try as it *could* be the most important item in your system, but then again you may shrug and say, I get nothing. Though it seems to help most systems play better music.

If you get the time put a review in the review section on how the system has changed especially with quotes of different bits of music.

OK I am very disappointed at lack of loans and sales this summer with BMU and mini BMU, people are missing out on something that *potentially* gives any system more music.

Anyway so maybe a little promotion is required, how about free P&P on loans of BMU and miniBMU for the month of August.

Hi Doc , I am being a bit slow with this reviewing thing as tbh I'm not very good at expressing what I mean however in the couple of weeks I have had my mini BMU I have noticed a much more relaxed type of sound, I am listening much more than I have for a long time but I am not listening for faults or stand out instruments just the music, Donald Fagan the Nightfly album for example (lp) bass lines are so much more distinct but not in your face you just actually hear the notes being played, it is also very noticeable on woodwind etc I don't think that it makes the instrument stand out from the rest it's just that if you want to you can choose to follow that particular strand James Taylor's Gaia (cd) from the hourglass album the weight of the drums had the hairs on my arms on end (I have an a30 mk 11) but It felt like the floor was falling away.Just the fact that I'm actually playing cd's means to me it's value for money as most of them have sat unused for years. I don't think I have a particular problem with my mains by the way which is one of the reasons I thought I would try the Mini rather than the BMU, I believe it has helped both LP and CD in my particular system, I haven't yet tried my computer based stuff so that may well be another treat.
