Even King Crimson re-invented themselves as a direct result of the Punk influence. Just listen to some of the tracks on Fripp's 'Exposure' or the 'League of Gentlemen' album with Sara Lee (bass - 'Gang of Four') and Barry Andrews (organ - 'XTC'). This lineup led directly to Fripp's next project 'Discipline' with ex-Talking Heads guitarist Adrian Belew. This group then became the 80's incarnation of KC with a new sound and a new direction.

Peter Gabriel 'II' (produced by Fripp) was also a conscious move towards the Post-Punk sound.
John Ellis of punk-band 'The Vibrators' became a respected musical figure after appearing on PG3 (along with Paul Weller) and was a member of Peter Hammill's 'K Group'. Hammill himself being regarded by many Punk musicians (including John Lydon/Johnny Rotten) as an inspiration.

One group that tried to go punk but failed rather uncomfortably were Gentle Giant with the album 'Civilian'.
Not their best work.

Im sorry Fretless but you are purposely side tracking the whole thing.

1. Ive outlined that Prog was all but over by the late mid 70's, Even that Wiki link confirms this.
2. What prog band that survived had no option to eith change style or turn to the commerical side of music
3. This new version of Prog is just that more of an appreciation of the original music form.

The only true Prog artist that i know that went down the punky route even before punk came along was Peter Hammill [Van Der Graaf Generator front man]

I am not sidetracking this discussion - because the discussion IS how has Prog adapted and evolved in the current age.
So far we have established that Progressive acts have both inspired and absorbed punk/new wave on the way to diversifying into subcategories such as:

Progressive Metal
Neo-Prog
Classical Rock
Post-Rock
Goth
Ambient
Electronic Rock
etc.

The trouble with having a blinkered, restricted view is that one is unable to appreciate how performers (like Gabriel, Hammill & Fripp) move on and develop, seek out uncharted musical landscapes and grow as artists.

The genre has the word 'Progressive' as its title - when does progress end....?

for heaven sake man what does it take to get thru that something that finish cannot evolve. Literally using the word Progress is a cop out. Something can be re started in the future but it is never the same.

Because things change.

Just because a couple of albums were made after 1972 doesn't mean they are devoid of any musical or artistic merit.

Do you even like music? Or are you just a fashion junkie stuck in his own obsession?
