I had the original 2 box Metrum Octave as I personally also prefer the NOS approach as a rule ---- it was very musical, and I'd be happy to buy another one if funds were available --- I'm going to risk ridicule and/or abuse but the SW1X for me did outperform it ( although personally I'd not pay £1k for either ) I bought the SW1 in the earlier cheaper days  .... However I have had to reign in the pennies and that hasn't been a bad thing as I probably wouldn't have tried the A2/P2 package and Id have missed out on some quality sounds ...... I have 2 'cheaper' DACs right now --- a terdak based Valeb NOS and an iFi DSD Nano ( both around £100 used ) and they have trumped others in the £100 to £350ish s/hand to my ears - including the Rega -- I'm going to sell one of them and struggling to decide which one tbh but I'll be happy with whatever I'm left with ....... Anyway enjoy the Metrums gents

The Octave and the current Metrum products aren't really comparable in performance terms. The internal architecture is also completely different, the DAC chips are unique to Metrum (Transient modules) and the Minuette and above also use FGPA with custom software. The design principles will be the same and they are obviously all NOS still; if you liked the Octave approach then it may well be worth you trialing one of the new products.

The DAC3 I bought last month or so is another NOS DAC example, using Phillips 1543 DACs - it's currently on loan to Antonio and he is enjoying it very much.

I think DACs in general are one area of our hobby where super performance can be achieved relatively cheaply

Just get a Fiio or something until the Doc's musical one comes along.. Why buy all this flavour-of-the-moment that nobody's ever heard of and is all but impossible to sell once attention's moved on?
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...
