I dunno. I'm not sure it's a skill wasted just because someone doesn't make cash out of it. If you contribute to forums and help others by sharing your knowledge, it's not a waste to me. Plus, I have a lot of respect for anyone who does a job that rewards in ways other than monetary advance or status.

That said, I know first hand that there's a sense of pleasure and achievement from salvaging and preserving kit that would otherwise cease to exist or fall into unappreciative hands. Only the individual can judge their own appetite and capacity, but sometimes a fruendly nudge from others who can see your talents and encourage you to use them can be a good thing. After all, there aren't many people around who have a wealth of knowledge and I doubt there will be too many more created because of the way the industry has changed.
