Is it OK for the government to knowingly break international law?
From BBC website:
"Under the UK's withdrawal agreement, Northern Ireland is due to stay part of the EU's single market for goods in a bid to avoid creating a hard border with the Irish Republic.
In parallel with talks over a post-Brexit trade deal, the UK and EU are negotiating the precise nature of new customs checks that will be required.
On Tuesday, Mr Lewis, the Northern Ireland secretary, told MPs it would allow ministers to override EU law in "tightly defined circumstances" if border negotiations broke down.
He conceded this would break international law in a "very specific and limited way" - but insisted it was a "safety net" in case the talks to iron out arrangements fail.
The government says it remains fully committed to the withdrawal agreement, and the bill is a necessary step to avoid a legal void if these talks fail.
Asked if he was comfortable with Mr Lewis' comments, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "Yes, because being in government is about priorities and protecting peace [in Northern Ireland] is the priority here."
A pragmatic solution? Or are we one step closer to the collapse of democracy in the UK?

No.
And it seems they are revelling in a deluded sense of machismo around the whole thing. Which I find terrible to behold.

Re: Is it OK for the government to knowingly break international law?
Absolutely not, and that's not coloured by my politics; the same applies to any government. We are already well on the way to becoming an international laughing stock, do we really want to become known as a "rogue state," too?
If they get away with this, it may only the beginning, that's my worry. Power is addictive, and they have enjoyed misusing far too much of that already.

It appears that even some Tory MPs don't think its OK to break the law. Whether they will vote accordingly is another matter...

Imagine voting Tory and knowing that you are personally responsible for this bunch of arseholes and international crooks being in power. Thankfully I don't have that to deal with.

Re: Is it OK for the government to knowingly break international law?
Whilst Boris is without doubt a complete and utter Pratt, doesn't mean that who ever voted for the conservative party may also be. Remember they didn't vote Boris in. Harsh to blame them. I can remember a time when Tony Blair broke international law, iraq?
either way I'm no more impressed with boris than i was with blair, are we saying that another political party would have been better?

I'm all ears for anyone that can come up with an optimal solution for the Northern Irish border issue, after the end of the Brexit Transition Period.
Bearing in mind that we may be in a No Deal situation on 1/1/21.
It's easy to knock. Less easy to come up with a good solution to this issue.

Re: Is it OK for the government to knowingly break international law?
This comes as no surprise following the unlawful suspension of Parliament a year ago and Demonic Dom's lockdown tour. We are now not only an international laughing stock but also international crimminals. I signed the on line petition against this breach of international law and shared it on Facebook but don't think it will do much good.
From the outset a rich and privaleged elite peronified by the likes of Rees-Mong, with Demonic Dom at the helm, have been hell ben on getting us out of the EU to further their own ends and bugger the consequences. The fact that we are in the middle of a pandemic with a possible second wave on the horizon makes no difference to the now seemingly inevitable no deal which no one with half a brain could support. With assistance from the Murdoch empire they have succeeded in pulling the wool over the thick masses appealing to xenephobic basic instincts. God help us.
