Re: Opinions on how the Government have handled the coronavirus outbreak

Johnson, on TV, supporting Cummings, is fast approaching the ridiculous.

There are so many conflicts in the variety of stories that are being told it's beyond stupid.

His wife wrote - in The Spectator - that both of them were knocked out by the virus, flat on their backs, Dom was "twitching" due to muscle spasms, but now, apparently, according to Johnson, they didn't actually need the childcare that Cummings apparently drove up there for. He's just more or less stated that Cummings didn't actually have COVID-19.

Grant Shapps says it would have been fine for him to be in Barnard Castle at the dates given if he drove up earlier than was first reported because that would have given him time to self-isolate for 14 days. The reason for the trip was to protect his child, so he locked said child in the car with his wife, who was symptomatic at the time, and if Cummings did actually contract COVID 19 he would have been asymptomatic, but able to spread it. It's a fair bet that at some stage they exited the vehicle, breaking lock-down whichever way you cut it because I don't know any 4-year-olds who can take a 260-mile drive without needing a toilet break. We're also expected to believe that it's purely coincidental that the day he was spotted in Barnard Castle was his wife's Birthday, and the second visit coincided with his mother's Birthday.

I know I'm horrendously biased, but honestly, I don't understand how anyone can listen to Johnson, and Grant Shapps this morning, and think to themselves "Well, that all sounds perfectly reasonable to me." There are more holes in this than a decent bit of Swiss Cheese.

A few choice quotes from today:
Jim Pickard – the chief political correspondent at the FT makes the point that – “Number 10 is apparently using WhatsApp to order MPs to circle the wagons and put out supportive statements to try to hold the line….”

Peter Jukes from ByLine Times points out that – “The Attorney General and most the cabinet now have accused Durham Police – one of the top-rated police forces in the country – of lying. This is disastrous for the rule of law during a pandemic.”

Former Tory MP Nick Boles says – “Whatever the rights and wrongs of Cummings’ trip to his family home, we can all agree that the Government has lost any moral authority to instruct the rest of us on how to conduct ourselves during this pandemic.”

Columnist Ian Birrell concludes – “So far today Downing Street has undermined the lockdown; the health secretary has undermined public health efforts; the attorney general has undermined respect for the law. All to protect one powerful aide.”

And as one member of the public quite rightly and angrily spits out – “I’m fuming. All those men who missed their babies being born, all those elderly mums and dads dying alone while their kids cried at home, all those unattended funerals. All on the instruction of a government now defending a mate who chose to take his suspected Covid on a road trip.”

Fair doos, this lot are the biggest bunch of half-whit scumbags I've ever seen in office.

I can't think of a lower calibre of government over the past few centuries.

A picture tells a thousand words. I have maintained for some time that Demonic Dom is to all intents and purposes running the country. He won't go unless Johnson goes first. The only way I can seeing that happening is a leadership challenge. That will depend upon enough Conservative MPs acting upon the anger of their constituents. If my MP was Conservative I would be emailing my feelings.

This is an interesting possible side effect following Johnson and his government's unequivocal support of Dominic Cummings.

4,000 Brits Could Now Appeal Lockdown Fines - Thanks to Dominic Cummings

The Government’s attempts to shore up the position of the Prime Minister’s chief advisor Dominic Cummings, by suggesting that the lockdown provisions are a matter of ‘individual responsibility’, may lead to the courts being swamped with appeals against fines imposed under its Coronavirus regulations.

Section 6 of The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020 states that no person may leave the place they are living without reasonable excuse. It then sets out the 13 situations which may be deemed reasonable. What it specifically does not do is set out a subjective test whereby individuals may ignore the regulations if they feel that that is the right thing to do, because such a clause would be a legal absurdity – a bit like saying that you can’t burgle someone’s house unless you think it is the right thing to do.

Section 9 of the same provisions gives the police the power to enforce these provisions and fines of up to £3,200 have been set in England (Wales has similar provisions but a maximum fine of £1,920).

The powers have been implemented enthusiastically by police forces around the country – if you are not able to provide an explanation under one of the 13 exceptions and you are away from home, you are convicted. So far, more than 14,000 people have been convicted and fined for breaching these regulations.
