Audiophiles and music lovers, what we share, and what we don't

Ran into this video clip from 'Audiophiliac' Steve Hoffman where he describes the similarities and differences that set the Audiophile apart from the average music-lover.

I recognise much of what he says and find it to be a good description of the reason why, for the majority of those reading this forum, we really need to get the best out of our audio systems.

Interesting discussion which treads on the what is 'hi-fi' question. Personally music is important but not life-defining in that I can live without it. (Live music is different in that it is a 'whole' experience of being there thing' and is another part of loving music. ) Likewise hifi is an involving satisfying hobby but only one of several hobbies. I get the listening to sound theory and I also want to hear 'more music' and as much as I can get through my system. But there is also 'musical information ' which encompasses more than just sound and is more intangible and probably more subjective.

Don't forget the 'big boys toys' syndrome and we are all 'gearheads' in a way looking for the next best toy/thing. Not sure we NEED to get the best out of systems but it is fun having a go at it !
