I dont think a dog would solve our problems with neighbourhood cats as they usually make the mess at night.

Try dumping some sand in an out-of-the-way corner. The cats will prefer to do their business in that as it is easier for them to cover up afterwards.

Just as idea.

Sounds good to me.

I don’t have a Mole problem, but I do have a Cat problem. Locally owned numerous cats (one neighbour is a breeder and shows her long haired Persian’s and she currently has eight of the blighters) have not been trained to use a litter tray and they enjoy my garden as their toilet. Over the last few weeks, I have been gating with a low gate grill and fitting chicken wire over any area of access. In addition I have two ultrasonic inhibitors. Even then, I still can’t keep the buggers out and they keep soiling our garden which my grandchildren play in. The irresponsibility of owners, not to mention how domestic cats negatively impact on wildlife really pisses me off. Of course, if they had dogs, they’d be hanging their black bags of dog poo on prominent trees in nice areas of natural beauty in protest at the expectation they should clear their dogs mess up. Many pet owners (not all), are a bunch of selfish arseholes!
Maybe you need to place some Alsation turds around the edge of your garden to keep the cats out?

Personally, I use a "detauper" which is available in France.

Not really humane, but what effective trap is.
I have 2 acres of garden to mow, and mower blades are expensive. The soil contains stones, which blunt the blades. When the grass is long I don't always see the mole hills, so yes, I blow them up.

If an effective repellent was available, I would use that.

Probably tempting fate here but we had moles when we first moved in 6 years ago. After about 6 months we got a dog and have not had a single one since... No idea if that is just coincidence or not.

In fact thinking about it I think they still come in at night and shit on the lawn instead

When we had a patio laid a few months ago there was sand on the ground, but the vegetable patch was still the prefered toilet. Had no choice but to baracade it up, like an AOS phono stage bake off.

I had to google "mole detauper".

This lead me to this Amazon listing:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ERADIC-16381-D ... B009LYHKYA

" The détaupeur is a type Mole Trap which operates a pyrotechnic effect of the behaviour taupe: it Seals systèmatiquement a hole left open in under 48 hours.
Works on taupiers voles and rats.
The effectiveness of the "détaupeur is based on the effect of a breath of pétard located in the roof rack."

I don't understand what it does and where the pétard in the roof rack comes in? But it looks like something from Bonfire Night.

Maybe moles don't like fireworks displays, or something?

Vinegar sprinkled where they 'go' is a great cat deterrent. Best of all is to get a cat of your own, as they are territorial and will keep others out, while usually not pooing in their own patch!
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...
