Judging books by their cover

Unread post by Latteman »

... is a bad habit of mine, as is album covers and of course band / artists names.
For example I have been aware of a group- 10000 maniacs for a few years- dismissing them a possible punk heavy crap- what do you expect with such a name
Well listening to radio paradise I heard a female vocal and thought- that’s good- omg - 10000 maniacs
Go to local vinyl shop- 1 album - in my tribe. Open to check condition and catch the vocalist name- Natalie Merchant- ooops- have a few of her solo albums

Moral of the story- u get it!
so don’t judge an artist by name- except Bananaramma- they ARE shite

Funny you should start this thread, i had on of those thoughts recently, the (ahem) artist was Madonna,
someone at work was playing her stuff through the store ceiling speakers before we open,
i always dismissed her as selling on shock, controversy, sex and tits but no substance,
maybe the ceiling speakers flattered her but what was coming was pretty good,
i later found the stuff being played was from Ray Of Light, Erotica and Bedtime Stories period,
always thought she was shite too, have i become a Hipster (i'm late 50's) or a ageing perv?,
and no i am not gonna check out her back catalogue. :hand:
Frank...made me do it.

Now you made me laugh not knowing Natalie merchant was the original singer in 10,000 maniacs. You also made a big mistake in not listening to Cowboy Junkies. I suggest you listen to The trinity Session for starters. Ray of Light is brilliant and so is Madonna's latest Madame X.

Natalie Merchant's Tigerlily is a repeat listen of mine. 8-)

Seems 'Ray Of Light' is Madonna's high point, didn't know so Youtubed Madame X,
lots of different influence and styles going on, vocals have a more clinical/etched feel to it,
she's certainly singing better than ever but most of the songs feel disjointed,
not like the spacey, ambienty cluby feel of the the others, repeat listen is called for.

If you like Tigerlilly I reckon you would love Ophelia my initial introduction to 10.000 Maniacs was a borrowed cassette tape on a Walkman in Belize around 89, as for the Cowboy Junkies I saw them a couple of weeks ago at the Sage in Gateshead they were excellent try their album The Caution Horses.
