Cheap crap marketed as inexpensive product is one thing. Cheap crap marketed as state of the art is another.

With hi-fi it's so easy to pull the wool over most buyer's eyes. By putting it in a fancy case, or adding some gimic such as inbuilt DAC or DSP or just putting a £10,000+ price tag on it.

Thankfully we have highly experienced designers such as Colin who can cast their expert eyes over the internals of an amplifier and quickly assess how much it would cost to build and what sort of corners have been cut in terms of ultimate sound quality.

Colin, would you be prepared to say what make and model the DUFF amplifier was?
Or is it more a case that this is so common in modern amplifiers that it would unfair to single out the manufacturer of this particular product?

Problem is is very easy with engineer hat on to just see what in the thing and disregard all the rest, but that gets you eventually at Jez's position, which is basically the circuit is all that matters, just build a great circuit using the cheapest parts in a cheap case and they will sell in droves. Problem is it doesn’t work, and doesn’t pay any bills.
