I was surprised at the "suspicion of murder" charge, bearing in mind that the report says "a struggle ensued" indicating that it was during this struggle that the burglar was stabbed. I thought that for a murder charge relied upon "malice aforethought express or implied". This indicates, to my mind at least, that there is something we've not been told yet. Whatever the charge, yes, he does deserve to be charged. I hope he's not found guilty though.

D.Q. will now tell me why I'm wrong.

No Jury is going to convict him. There have been more blatant cases of 'self defence' were crown prosecution service have not brought any charges. Frankly I think you should have the right to line them up and mow the bastards down with a Kalashnikov. Save on cost of locking them up.

Its not the job of the police to decide gilt or not, they just collect evidence and pass it on. If someone has died and someone stabbed the dead person, what else should they do, take the killers word for it and tell them to go and have a cup of tea? Are all 78 year old people automatically gilt free?

If they were in my home I too would use as much "reasonable force" as was required to make sure the bastard stayed on the floor. I can't imagine that he would be convicted but in this country who knows?

No doubt it'll be investigated accordingly and if it's deemed he wasn't acting in self defense then he'll be charged. Two blokes enter pensioners house to rob him, one of them buys the farm, I'm certainly not losing sleep over the dead guy.
