If you have 10 minutes to spare, this BTF film is a golden gem of nostalgia about snow on the railways and how men used to deal with it.
Richard would like it I'm sure.

Re: Snow
The problem is here snow is not the norm so there is not enough investment to deal with it. They invested a lot after the 62/63 freeze but the equipment never got used much and probably rusted up. A few centimetres isn't really an issue on main roads in town. Here I have a gritter depot at bottom of road so it's always clear and first to get gritted. Previously lived in a Cul de sac at bottom of a steep slope which was never gritted. Could be stranded when rest of roads were clear. Nobody's going to invest hundreds or even thousands of £s in extra wheels for winter tyres if you use them 2 or 3 days a year at most.

Mat be not? But, as we were watching the BBC Wales news report about the heavy snow causing disruption across Wales it was also reported that Arriva trains had the wheels issue during the same piece on snow - massive coincidence! Where the hell were their maintenance people only to have spotted this when it was snowing?

Re: Snow
We do have difficult snow here. Whether 4" or 4'. This afternoon I stepped on some snow on my outside steps. It immediately turned to snow/ice and became very slippery. We don't have the temperature drop to make powder 'manageable' snow, so our snow is much more dense and shifts to a semi-ice state very quickly. The only other place in the northern hemisphere to get this snow is Newfoundland and they struggle like we do.

Re: Snow
This lot of snow was more fluffy but the stuff 2 weeks ago was finer and more icy. Actually a bigger covering by far this time round but it's melted quickly on paved areas.
