The Death of Windows Phone.

Unread post by Fretless »

Well it looks like Microsoft have thrown in the towel and called it a day - Windows 10 Mobile (or Windows Phone) will no longer be officially developed and new security updates will only be provided until sometime in 2019.

It's a pity as I'm quite happy with my Nokia 830 smartphone which does everything I need it to do perfectly well. Although the major irritation is that all the fun Apps are only available for Android and Apple - nobody has bothered with Windows Phone for some years now. There was a time where Microsoft made a serious bid to play for the newly-breaking mobile market. Briefly becoming a serious contender before hardware support of manufacturers went over to the more easily available Google Android system. They tried again with the launch of Windows 10 - effectively a single OS platform for PC's laptops, tablets and phones; providing integration between all your devices. But that didn't catch on.

Basically they made a big mistake by taking over Nokia and dismantling it. So, having had 2 Windows Phones I now have been looking around for an Android model and think that I'm going to go for a Huawei - which seem to be the best value for money at the moment.

The times, they are a changin'...

Bill Gates now uses an Android phone, although he does comment that he has "lots of Micro$oft applications" loaded on it. I think that probably says it all.

Can we have our start menu back then? And all the other desktop features that have gone in the rush to pretend they can compete in the tablet/phone world?

Windows phone simply didn't attract enough developers. Microsoft makes more money from Office than any OS. And with Microsoft 365 we have 'desktop as a service'. All they need is to get the Windows 10 interface to run over Android or IOS and they're there. :)

Why would I, or any one, want the Windows 10 interface on iOS? :angry-screaming:

I've had a Huawei P9 for over a year now and it's the best phone I've had. It's only budget level but does everything I need, even the music player is decent. I've got a 64gb MicroSD card fitted with loads of FLAC files loaded on and it's perfectly adequate for my lunchtime listening.

I'm thinking of the Huawei Mate 9. Nice big screen.

All we need now is the death of the Windows PC.

Windows has been a mediocre operating system over the years.

Doubt that mediocrity rules
