The world is full of Nimby's. Most people would think the same if it happened to them. Progress is good if it doesn't adversely affect your life. I suspect many people don't give hs2 a second thought as it doesn't affect them negatively or positively. HS2 wasn't going to stop at my local train station (1/2 mile away) so I would only be affected negatively. Plus I would be very unlikely to use it even if it did stop. A fast train for fat cats. And most business types are fat from over consumption in more ways than one. In my opinion they should be made to bloody cycle to London

karatestu wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 8:52 pm I have read many things on the STOPHS2 website, one thing they mention is that engineers did not properly survey and many problems have arisen that were not costed in. One of those is the extensive mining subsistence that has occurred in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. That could be one reason why the Eastern leg has been scrapped.

But Geoff is probably right in that it is political. Many people have said that if they were serious about "levelling up" then construction should have started in Yorkshire. Frankly I couldn't give a toss as I have got the outcome I wanted. Shame about the poor sods who live on the western leg. You may notice that I focus on the emotional aspects of this as to me it is all that matters. I really don't care about any money I would have lost.

Talking of money, there must have been quite an amount of money wasted on the Eastern leg. My land is unregistered as it is not law to register it if you inherit it. It took hs2 Ltd ages to track me down and when they did I ignored the letters until more than a year later somebody turned up at my door  I like to think I wasted a bit of their budget, oh yeah that thought makes me feel good.

Eventually I got paid £1000 for some surveys they wanted to do that to my knowledge never happened. Well they're not getting that money back I'm going to spend it on enjoying myself and maybe a donation to The Good Law Project who do some marvellous work.
Nothing wrong with being a NIMBY. There is a proposal to build a mosque near us and my wife and I have submitted objections to the council.
Are they planning to build a model railway in the grounds?
Are you suggesting that the government could build a model railway with any less disruption, destruction and argument?

Not quite.
We are about ten minutes walk from the main rail line where there is a proposal to build a station. Really hope it goes through as the central station in town is a good distance away and it is a drag to have to travel there and then pass by near where we live.

It is the main line to London and there are no houses anywhere near it. The station would be by a park and a lake.

Features very prominantly in his autobiography. Don't recall Neil Young mentioning it in his.

It's illuminating to read this thread alongside the threads on climate change.

Come on world leaders, save the planet and do it now. But, no personal disruption thank you.

Rail is the most environmentally friendly way to travel, and rail freight is 3 to 4 times more fuel efficient than road. However, such considerations don't survive first contact with personal interest.

I don't know if I'd be any different. And, I can certainly believe that consultation and implementation could have been handled better, but the basic dichotomy remains. We all want the planet to be saved, but none of us want to be inconvenienced along the way.

That's all very easy to say if you are not affected. If you were I expect your response would be very different .

The future is limited travel. There is no reason for it. The pandemic has proved it is possible for business to survive without face to face contact.

I agree, but then it's equally easy to say 'save the planet'. I'm not accusing you of anything that I'm not accusing myself of.

Then scrap your car and don't replace it. And, shall NVA field agents do demos by Zoom call? There will always be a demand for travel. Why wouldn't we want that travel to be as fuel efficient as possible?

I don't begrudge you your victory over HS2, but it's not a victory for the environment, overall.
