My shit laptop installed .Net 4.8 finally from a stand alone install avoiding Windows Update. Still won't touch the 1903 feature update (1903 has been on for ages now with no obvious issues) which is a huge download and 'installation' takes hours it seems. It gets to 70% and sometimes more and then fails...

When my Laptop crashed last week I tried everything I knew to try and get it going again. Nothing worked and I need the thing for work - time for a professional.

Luckily in the nearest small town (Leerdam - from the Leerdammer cheese) is a PC repair shop with a good rep for speed and price. He has managed to retrieve all my files and get a clean Windows 10 installed. And an SSD at cost. I'm not complaining and it has saved me a lot of brain-breaking hours which I don't need right now.

Got the laptop back yesterday and does that SSD make a difference! Was planning to do that years ago but the speed of this familiar machine is now, to me, mind-boggling. Especially after the frustrations of the agonizingly-slow netbook I had to resort to.

But then I had to urgently print off a PDF that had come in via Email. That meant installing:

Browser: Opera (I like it)
Security system: ESET (very good)
Email: eM Client (just found this - super-easy auto setup of accounts)
Adobe Reader
Printer driver: Brother printers work well but the software is irritating.

With the new turbo-charger in the machine I got all this done in record time and with remarkably little hassle. Next stop is installing Exact Audio Copy and get back to ripping CD's again.

Do you really need ESET these days? Windows own security is apparenltly very good.

ESET has a secure e-banking server of it's own. Handy in these times of internet criminality.

Like to feel I'm protected.

When I raced pre65 event in Holland we used to stay at a campsite near Gorinchem, Lingebos ?

One day we got a ferry across the river and cycled to Leerdam.

I have very fond memories of a pancake house between Gorinchem and Leerdam. :)

Know it all well. About 5 miles from me.

Pancake House is still there, as is the campsite in the Lingebos. :guiness;

Put SSDs in both my Mac computers a year or so ago, as you say probably one of the best upgrades for speed there is. Getting cheaper too.

It's funny, desktop gaming PC's, I can get away with mechanical hard drives.

Laptops and my email and web server and it's SSD's all the way. So much so that I'm writing this on a 2011 HP 8440p laptop (with an SSD upgrade) that's still pleasantly quick to use. I'm wondering how many more years I can keep it going. I see it as a nice challenge; seeing how old a laptop I can have that still works well.

Sort of like having really old hi-fi bits and bobs that still does a good enough job...
