Looking at the total screw-up the UK is making of a weak attempt to detach itself from the EU - it's doubtful that the Italians will go for that. But what they will do is use the threat of an exit to get themselves a better bargaining position economically.

That is the "just EU look down on us" line, just part of the elite games of self protection. The Brits make a habit of not looking sensible on the surface, but we don't know what is going on underneath as absolutely nothing has in reality been decided, even by the referendum. That was just the children asking Father Christmas what they want in their stocking, but you have to wait and see what you get. Italy, Austria, Portugal, and Spain would probably detach if there was a vote. Greece would but can't.
