Re: Noise cancelling headphones
NO! I don't want ear plugs, I want noise cancelling headphones. They have a microphone that picks up external noise, a small amplifier inbuilt usually with a battery. That signal from outside is then phase inverted to the two headphone inserts or cups so the noise in one ear cancels out the other = silence.

Re: Noise cancelling headphones
Is it to drown out Nadia shouting , let me know if they work , I will get a pair . All I hear these days is her moaning about the children , children moaning about what they want and toddler DQ saying repeatedly "what is this daddy" despite the fact he bloody well knows the name of what he is pointing at. Silence would be welcome .

Re: Noise cancelling headphones
yes [ in theory ] an inverted phase signal at the same frequency cancels out the other signal and thus silence .jammy395 wrote:But would they work if no music was playing........

Re: Noise cancelling headphones
They have nothing to do with music, unless that music is the noise you are trying to remove.jammy395 wrote:But would they work if no music was playing........

Re: Noise cancelling headphones
I know they are made but the whole thing is very confusing as ordinary music buds and headphones are being called noise cancelling and I don't know why.
A lot of airlines provide them as standard for 1st class and business class customers. They kill the aircraft noise but cut out for announcements..

Re: Noise cancelling headphones
Yes that is how a BMU works with mains noise. Which is why I always say "like noise cancelling headphones" now I see few seem to understand what they are.Daniel Quinn wrote:yes [ in theory ] an inverted phase signal at the same frequency cancels out the other signal and thus silence .jammy395 wrote:But would they work if no music was playing........

Re: Noise cancelling headphones
Active noise cancelling is used in headphones like the Audio Technica ATH-ANC70 which is designed for on-flight use and claims to eradicate up to 90% of the noise from the surroundings.
