The steam leaking at the front is deliberate, as the driver has the cylinder steam cocks open and just a smidge on the regulator to blow through and stop steam condensing in the piston valves and cylinders and turning to water. Water wont compress and if the driver starts the engine with water in the valves or cylinders it will blow out the ends of the cylinders.

Driving steam locos is not like a car or even a modern diesel or electric loco. You have to nurse the thing as though it were living.
I (with some refresher) would be allowed to fire it but not drive it, though I know how.

I didn't discover this until after he went but my brother-in-law's father qualified as a driver on steam in the late sixties - so one of the last driver to qualify for steam on BR.
