Labour Party

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

The Lib Dems must be sighing in relief as they now become the only sensible competition for the Tories, and the Tories must be laughing their heads off. Will we now see another 20 years of Tory rule, well two elections at least.

Feckin' idiots Labour just committed electoral suicide.

Nonsense, I voted for Jeremy and Tom. Their job is not to win the election but to rediscover the soul of the party and hand it to the man or woman who will.

This needed to happen. We could no more return to the Blair years than we could return to the Foot era. This is not a return to the past but about forming a credible opposition again which is truly progressive. Jeremy has a tough job on his hand but he has the weight of popular opinion behind him.

Yes for socialist it is, and it may be that he could end up being the best thing we have ever had, BUT he will not be allowed to be as human nature and historical precedent will see to that. The problem is decisions made with the heart and principle as labour has done before has always ended up in disaster for them, apart from the end of the 2nd world war when circumstances worked in their favour, and they managed to cock that up as well.

Politics is a process of self interest and the brain.

It will all come down to what the economy is looking like in four years time. If it's doing OK, the Tories will win, whoever's leading them (Cameron has said he won't seek a third term). If it's doing badly, people may well give Labour a chance, even with Corbyn in charge.

The problem with Corbyn as Labour leaders is that he's a serial rebel, so how will he inspire/command loyalty amongst Labour MPs when he's shown no loyalty to past Labour leaders?

I thought that economy doing well on an even keel was a predictor of a labour victory. Economy doing badly was a predictor of a conservative victory. Both parties want to claim that their monetary and fiscal policy is driving the economy but the reality may be the other way around.

If the economy is doing well, a 'Don't let Labour screw it up' manifesto would play well for the Tories, especially against an untested left-wing Labour leader. If it's doing badly, how would the Tories sell themselves? 'We screwed up last time. so give us another five years to finish the job'? It would be especially difficult for the Tories if Osborne was in charge by then, as he's essentially been directing their economic policy since 2010.

I agree with you br-itpop. I'm no labour supporter but this was a great result for grass roots Labour.

The biggest theeat we as a country face is the EU - so let's hope Corbyn's past scepticism comes to the fore along with his dislike of establishment bastards.

I'd like to see Tony B Liars head on a pike staff outside the gates to Downing street as a warning to the illuminati loving f'kin traitors!

you know, labour were against the eec (as it was then) and then changed their mind when it realised that many of the policies that we had to accept were quite socialist. i don't know what corbyn thinks of europe now but as a block i would assume that labour are pro europe.

all this has shown is that political party membership of both parties lie well to the extreme. don't forget that the conservatives voted for that numpty duncan-smith. as a totality the british electorate is centrist at best, which is the reason tony blair was voted in - he was more right wing then a few conservatives......
