What crippled Germany (and the Reichsmark) was the requirement to pay huge war reparations in foreign currency (gold). You can print your own currency but not others (especially, gold). Germany was hit with the double whammy of large amounts of hard currency leaving the country and a dramatic fall in production (mostly due to France limiting Germany's access to natural resources from the Rhine). Printing money in such a scenario usually leads to hyperinflation (as there is not enough to buy). If post WW1 governments had understood the impact on Germany of being forced to make very high reparation payments in gold, then they could have thought twice about imposing such damaging currency pressures (and probably avoided a second world war).

However, when Hitler's government spent large amounts on re-arming, it was to the benefit of the whole economy and Germany came out of depression much faster than most other countries. We could do something similar, today, with government spending on green technologies and a national programme of insulating homes. And, there are other productivity boosting activities such as improving transport links for workers.
