I assume all here have read / heard about the Rifkind-Straw situation. The radio4 approach seems to be about MP's having or not having an additional source of employment to their ministerial / parliamentary duties. Why is this? I would really like additional employment that netted me between £5K and £8K a day. I could retire and order as much T.I.S. as I can eat! Instead we see the real threat of the withdrawal of the whip, and Parliamentary disciplinary proceedings. I'll bet they're quivering in their hand-made brogues!
My point.... Don't assume it's just big business that are responsible for the decline in morals. Our elected representatives are so deep into the trough all you can see is the crack in their a**e. For me, I've done a Pontious Pilate and hope their likes (if guilty) are sent down. What price an ex-home secretary in prison? Work it out for yourselves.

I debated all this stuff as a politics grad so lost my appetite for it after too many drunken rows.

These days Marxism is a tool of analysis to me. I gave up trying to explain it to people years ago but have yet to find a better way to make sense of the world we live in.

Does that make me a socialist? I couldn't say. All I can do is reflect on my own experiences and for me there are better outcomes generally when the game is run for the many rather than the few, but a game it is ultimately.

This doesn't stop me from being a petty creature though, to paraphrase de Tocqueville I do believe that in a democracy people get the government they deserve and, until they start to understand the mechanics of production, the majority deserve no better than what we've currently got.

I do love the ragged trousered philanthropist though, 'the great money trick' chapter should be required reading in all schools.
