The Twenty-Tens, what happened?

Unread post by Fretless »

Not only are we approaching the end of the year but also the end of the decade '2010's'. Time has passed, water has flowed under bridges, things have changed - or not.

Keeping things close to home, here. The decade saw the rebirth of NVA as Richard decided to inject new life into his designs, and it is saddening for us all that he hasn't made it to the end of the decade.

A moment of Respect and Remembrance.

RD has left us with this forum, a community of music-lovers, DIYers and technical enthusiasts. And the NVA brand is entering a new phase with the same basis and philosophy attached to a contemporary commercial vision.

Personally, the decade has left me with many lessons learnt and some still unfinished. A different sense of self-worth - and a far better HiFi setup than I had in 2010, that's for certain.

How was your decade?

My decade started with the birth of my son and first born in Feb 2010. Best thing i ever did was start a family. They make life worth living and keep me young at heart.

I was bodging the hell out of Naim equipment at the time. When my son started walking my system got packed away and did not come out again for about six years when my daughter turned three.

Lost my dad in 2012 and that took some getting over. My kids helped me through that.

RD passing was / is really sad and i am so glad he decided to get NVA going again and started HFS. Although i didn't discover it until 2017 this forum and discovering NVA equipment has been the best thing to do happen to my music. He will never be forgotten.

The decade has seen the resurgence of my interest in hifi after thirty years. I could not stand any more of the flat earth :Bllocks: and totally lost interest, sticking with budget systems. The Internet has thoroughly exposed what went on, no more so than the HFS forum. The discovery of NVA, with direct sales and the thirty day return option, has been a revelation resulting in me getting the credit card out. I became aware that there was something to be gained without paying rip off prices. The coming of age of digital playback with lossless streaming has also been a revelation. I have a lot more time to play an almost unlimited libraty of music now following unexpected early retirement in 2017. RDs passing was very sad, but I am so glad the company has continued.

It has also been a good decade for rock with the decline which started at the end of the 70s being reversed. The established acts are continuing until they drop and a lot of good younger bands influenced by them are on the scene.

For me this decade has been an absolute shit show. Lost jobs, redundancy, tears, loss, illness and poverty.
3 good things in ten years, my last son was born in Feb 2010, I got married, and I set up bte designs. But only out of pure desperation because of redundancy and job losses and an absolutely awful job market in 2011/2012. It as the only other thing I was good at. How to stand out from the millions of other people who had lost jobs. Applying for probably 80 jobs a month. when you previously had a specialised job, even shop/warehouse/call centre work was not available because you had no experience in those areas and the next person in the line did.
The last 2 or 3 years have been less awful, bte designs hasn't gone under at least, but my wife's illness has tainted everything.

Quite frankly, for me the 2010s can fuck off.

I guess the same as most folk, good and bad things have happened in the past 10 years. I've met many friends, then having to return to the uk which was a real bummer. I started using the internet and went onto hifi forums, is that good or bad, and of course found NVA. May have also found a very special person.

2010s?

My 'getting fat' years. That all changes...once I've finished this pack of dark chocolate digestives

Want to take more care of myself this next decade. A few friends have gone vegan. Not sure I can manage that...but any improvement I can make is still better than none.

The kids seem to have grown quite a bit, too, but in a good, healthy way. Even the youngest of 5 is now a teenager.

Meeting Tomasz, working with him and having him to stay has been a hugely positive end to the decade.

At the start of the 2010s, I doubt I even knew that hi-fi forums existed...

On a personal note it's not my favourite decade, it started with so much promise, but by 2012 the good stuff was unravelling and no matter how hard I tried it was often a case of one step forward followed by one or more backwards. People who I trusted turned out to be complete shits. On a broader perspective, global and UK politics have unfortunately impacted everyone, irrespective of whether you are actively involved or not. My disillusionment with the current political situation is so strong I am honestly thinking of selling up and moving to someone in Europe and the only thing stopping me right now is the need to make sure my mother's final years are as good as possible. I don't want to end my input on a negative front because all around there are good people quietly doing great things and I am really grateful to everyone pushing the climate change message because that's the big one, that's the one that will hopefully usher in a more thoughtful and balanced 2020s & 30s. Onward and upwards eh 🤞
