Yes they are lying as we have discussed here before recently, and the lie has been used so much it has become common amoungst hi-fi people. You see the problem is a class B can be biased to simulate class A, which is why it is called class AB, for part of its power range, even up to fairly high levels by setting a high bias current on a class B amp you simulate class A. That is why it is called class AB, but the class A is not the same as a true class A which is single rail and single ended, the Monarchy and the Krell and many others that tell this lie have complimentary output stages and split rail so are class B, as I say the bias makes them AB. They are not real A and can never be real A, they are AB - full stop.

It is a marketing con job and a lie that has been used so many times it has almost become accepted, apart from by people who know it is a lie. We have a hobby now dominated by bullshit, this is just one example, we will point out many more as time goes on.

Doc.

Electronics layman here..

Does complimentary output split rail mean "push-pull"

Cheers

Another lie:

Active speakers / crossovers are technically better than passives.

Truth = each approach has technical advantages and disadvantages.

Out of interest, what are the technical disadvantages?

I started a thread on that here

https://www.avforums.com/threads/the-bi ... s.2183729/

as I was fed up of reading the "Actives are technically better" mantra on that forum.

With op amp based 4th or 8th order active crossovers being shockingly bad in the number of active amplification devices they add to the signal path.

It's another one of those hi-fi Banarama jobs. It aint what you do, it's the way that you do it.

It does with valve amps. Marco has a push pull valve power amp he tells everyone is class A, same lies it is class AB.

Passive crossovers produce no noise (well next to none as everything creates noise to a degree). Active crossovers create thermal noise and phase related distortion from the unity game op amps and from the associated power supply, so are in fact worse, it is another marketing lie.

If used where it should be and was developed for in PA systems there are definite advantages to active crossovers, due to size, cable length, noise fields etc. BUT in hi-fi we don't have these problems so it is purely marketing bullshit.
