Guilty pleasures

Unread post by ArloFlynn »

Guilty pleasures.
We all have them, whether it’s a bit of ABBA, Carpenters, BeeGees, Mario Lanza! Or Val Doonican? ( I love Val)
Spill the beans, don’t be shy.

My guilty pleasure today was – Ingenue by KD Lang. I think it is one of those ‘’accidently good albums’’ It sort of seeps into the soul. I have played it since the early 90’s and it still gets a couple of airings a year now. Don’t be shy with the volume on this either, all that slow seepage sounds better louder!

I never think of Ingenue as a guilt pleasure, just a fantastic and great sounding album. I have a few other KD Lang albums, all good but Ingenue is exceptional.

Inguene is far to cool to be a guilty pleasure.

I'll start the bidding with...

Middle of The Road - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep

The cover by one of my 1990s faves, Lush, is also pretty good...

I am in the hi-fi trade

I'm a sucker for these too. I recently watched a MOTD recording from the mid 60's of a Chelsea v Leeds United game. Early doors ( to quote Ron Atkinson  ) Eddie McCreadie put in the most horrendous foul tackle on Johnny Giles that I think broke his leg and left Leeds with 10 men for most of the game, no subs in those days. All Kenneth Wolstenholme could say was that it was an accidental clash

A forerunner to the infamous 1970 cup final a few years later.

Simply Red
“Say You Love Me.”

A fantastic song. Brings out the old softie in me.
Somebody’s telling me the latest scandals.
Somebody’s stepping on my plastic sandals. Joe Jackson (1979)

I watched highlights of the 1974 Charity Shield, X certificate stuff. They did not show tht horrendous tackle by Allan Clarke on a young Phil Thompson straight from the kick off which started it all off. The showed Tommy Smith taking Clarke out of the game later on. Worse was to come. Giles landed a puch on Keegan which Mike Tyson would have been proud of leading to a scrap between Keegan and Bremmner for which they were both sent off and received lengthy suspensions for taking off their shirts. That was a friendly.

In a league match I saw Norman Hunter (Covid 19 victim RIP) shatter Francis Lees nose with a blatent delberate elbow after Lee had conned the referee into giving a penalty. Following the elbow Lee chased after Hunter throwing punches. It also got a bit fiesty at international level. Brazil were not going to get literally kicked out of the 74 World Cup as they were in 66. There match against Holland was quite brutal.

Currently, it's "Upload" on Amazon Prime Video. I don't "do" romcoms, but unlike most of them, it's both grown-up, and quite funny.

Talking of Football - and not being a massive fan of it, (Stoke City supporter) - I have decided, after watching the past few weeks worth of ''Match Of Their Day'' TV program, that the game was far more interesting and exciting in the 90's and up to around 2002. Then something happened? And the past 15 or so years have been dull as dishwater, Faceless, characterless and dreary football. My opinion anyway. Probably to much cash to spend and too much misunderstood theory; that the more you pay, the better they will play. Or maybe I don't like Football anymore.
