Lots of groups have recently been mentioned on lists- what was the first album u owned or heard from a particular group that got U interested and held your favour
Here are a few of mine
Queen- Jazz; although I knew about BR it was a Jazz copy on a TDK tape that caught my Queen interest

Neil Diamond- Hot August Night- again a tape but legal copy

Phil Collins / Genesis / Peter Gabriel- So - investigated origins and found the others

AC/DC - Back on Black- I never looked back love it all (tape again)

Pink Floyd / Waters - Radio Chaos

Dire Straits- Making Movies, love Romeo & Juliet

Prince- Purple Rain. - went a bit obsessive about albums legit & bootleg

Del Amitri - Waking Hours- love Justin Currie’s song writing

Boomtown Rats - Tonic for the troops. bought 1978 after hearing ' she's so modern' I liked it very much at the time, but moved on shortly after that summer.

Blondie - Parallel lines. Bought in 1978 after hearing 'Denis' then 'Picture this' Could not decide between Plastic letters & Parallel lines. I still think their 1st three are great albums.

Sex Pistols - Never mind the Balls Bought 1978 because I thought I should. Greatest album ever!

Stranglers - Black & White Bought 1978, the 2nd greatest album ever?

I changed tack slightly in '79 but have always loved punk and new wave.

Bowie took over from here and his back catalogue followed.

Abbey Road - The Beatles was the first LP I owned.

Split - The Groundhogs was the LP that got me hook, line and sinker and really started my musical journey back in 1971.

Pistols - Bollocks. Heard it as an 11 year old in my penfriend's bedroom in rural Denmark in the summer of 78. Swigged my first bottle of lager at the same time.

Crass - Stations of the Crass. Anarchy, Love & Peace in North East Essex. The Pistols talked the talk. Crass walked the walk.

Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material. Sat watching a BBC Play for Today - Iris In The Street, Ruby In The Rain - Jake Burns buzz-sawing the opening chords of Suspect Device.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Get Happy. The first soul record I ever loved.

Wire - 154. Greater complexity and the hint of art for arts sake...which led to

Throbbing Gristle - Second Annual Report. Kraftwerk from hell.

The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & The Lash. When my dad's collection of Dubliners, Fureys, Chieftans etc all started to make sense.

My first album was "Rockbuster," a double vinyl that cost me the princely sum of 29s 11d, or a penny short of thirty bob... or, around £1.50, in 1970.

2 discs, 26 tracks, and probably 90% of the artists on it I still play today. Amazon currently has a copy which is selling at £13.00, I won't bore you with the track-listing, but here's a link if you're interested.

I have the same affection for Picnic (A Breath Of Fresh Air) [Harvest label sampler] and How Blue Can We Get? [Blue Horizon label sampler], both purchased in 1970 also. The artists on those 3 albums actually form a large part of my core listening to this day.

I remember that "Rockbuster" sampler LP though I didn't own it. I had another CBS one with all the same artists on called "Together". I think that was 99p. Also, at that time samplers were the way to go when you' were a pennyless schoolkid. See also "El Pea" (Island), "All Good Fun" (UA/Liberty), "Gutbucket" (Liberty), "The Age Of Atlantic" (Atlantic). There were several more but they have long gone and I can't remember the titles anymore.

Yup, I've still got "El Pea" and "The Age of Atlantic" (with Zep's Communication Breakdown on), "The Rock Machine Turns You On" (CBS), the wonderful "Wowie Zowie! The World of Progressive Music" (Decca), "Nice Enough to Eat" (Island), "Fill Your Head With Rock" (CBS again), "Garden of Delights" (Elektra), "Bumpers" (Island again), and another really excellent one, "Charisma Disturbance". Then there are the later ones from the likes of the Stiff, and Chiswick labels. Sometimes you'd find a track on the samplers that wasn't released anywhere else too.

It was either Status Quo - Twelve Gold Bars or Simple Minds - Live In The City Of Light. One of which met an untimely end with the negligent discharge of a pellet gun.

It should be added that this was the 80s and kicked off a vinyl collecting, hi-fi trip that has slowed to a crawl but will never cease, as long as I'm around there'll be music parping from a speaker.
