Apart from The Beatles, who seem to be several folks seminal musical experience, I see the name Supertramp cropping up a few times.

The first rock album I became really obsessed with was their 'Crisis? What Crisis?' which I had as a cassette copied from a friends LP. Played it so many times - still grabs me.

You see, I got a double disposition
Sometimes I'm mean, sometimes I'm vicious
I'm Doctor Jekyll, and Mister Hyde
So if you want to stay alive
Just give me all you've got to give
And then perhaps I'll let you live

My parents didn't have a record player or radio in the house so my early music experiences were either from the radio on car journeys or from TV. I had to wait until I was in my teens before I saved up £5 to buy a dansette from an older lad in the swimming club who wanted to buy a proper stereo. The first song that made an impact on me was the Archies - Sugar Sugar. Having looked it up it was released in 1969 when I would have been 4, that seems a bit earlier than I remember anything else as clearly from my childhood.

As far as TV is concerned Sunday was a special day with Weekend World (Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride) and The Money Programme ( Jimmy Smith - Main Title Theme from The Carpetbaggers) that my dad used to watch regularly. There was also a local midweek nature programme that had Jethro Tull - Bouree as it's theme. Not that I knew who or what the tracks were at the time, just that they were exciting to hear.

My grandparents were stewards at a golf club and the parties held there featured some Rock and Roll records so I ended up listening to Elvis, Eddie Cochrane and Buddy Holly, Showaddywaddy and Darts.

At secondary school our first year music teacher played tracks from Rush - The Trees and Supertramp - Rudy before I got taken out of the lessons. From there I went on to AC/DC, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Led Zep, Scorpions and MSG etc with the majority of my schoolmates.

In my early twenties I was introduced to reggae and starting going to a nightclub that played early house music in the pre rave days, I also went to other clubs that played a lot of soul and jazz funk. Over the years I have enjoyed listening and dancing to music from most genres and I was constantly on the lookout from something new but like CN I'm now trying to delve deeper into current favourites.

I remember being at a village youth disco and an older soulboy coming up to me after I had been headbanging, pogoing and dancing to northern soul and telling me in a threatening manner that I should decide which type of music I liked. I liked stuff from them all so I didn't see why I should stick to just one.

1969 was the year it really started for me when I was ten. Must have been when I had my first transister radio. Some of the big hits of that year left a lasting impression, not least the Beatles Get Back and The Balad of John and Yoko. i was into outer space so loved Space Oddity. I then forgot about Bowie until Ziggy Stardust came along. I recall my parents saying how horrible the Rolling Stones were and the death of Brian Jones. Little did they know I would be paying a lot of money to see them nearly fifty years later. They said they would not last

The Rolling Stones remain a band that I have never really got into despite a couple of attempts. Queen also.
Don't like Bob Dylan either - it's that whining, nasal voice of his.
