That song has also been labelled the start of heavy metal. Dave Davies ripped a speaker cone to achieve the distortion.

Grime - is it the new punk. It seems to speak to the same people (kids) in the same way.

What is grime? Modern trends have left me behind. I thought rap and hip hop were the rage with kids.

There's no way you can call The Stooges / MC5 punk. Punk is a British music/fashion scene with the first releases coming out towards the end of '76. I'm talking The Sex Pistols, The Clash, X Ray Specs, The Damned, Generation X, Siouxsie and The Banshees ete.

Everyone else just latched on to this, as for America and Punk, that's just bollocks (apart from the Dead Kennedy's).

I saw Iggy Pop for the first time in 1979 and he was more what i would describe as punk than any British punk band I have seen. I believe his act would have been very similar ten years earlier.

Only audiofools and Hoffmanites would be pedalling the style of mong-shoite going down in this thread.

Precisely the reason why I raised the point about definitions, right at the start. As far as I'm concerned (proper) British Punk and so-called American Punk are two completely different animals which happen to share the same name. I dare say that there are some Americans who would hold an entirely opposite view.

Missy, your suggestion was that the first punk tracks were by a 1964 American garage band.

So, be you an Audiofool? Or a Hoffmanite?
