The End of Prog

Unread post by Fretless »

The 70's were the glory days of Progressive Rock with bands like Genesis, Yes, ELP and King Crimson boldly going where no musicians had gone before. But their shining lamp was extinguished by the rise of Punk - where actually being able to play an instrument wasn't necessary - and the music industry falling under the control of the 'suits' who were only interested in record sales and chart positions.

Some bands adapted and survived, Genesis turned into a hit-machine and Yes, assisted by The Buggles, mutated into a tech-rock-pop outfit. Others tried to change but fell by the wayside (Camel, Renaissance) or just embarrassed themselves (Mike Oldfield's 'Earth Moving').

The 80's forced Prog underground and a second wave emerged: Marillion, Twelfth Night, Spock's Beard, Saga, etc. These can be categorised as Neo-Prog.

So, of the 70's acts - what was the LAST GREAT PROG ALBUM ?????

An index of possibilities:

Yes 'Going For The One' (1977)
Genesis 'Wind & Wuthering' (1976) (for Hackett fans)
Genesis 'Duke' (1980) (for the rest)
Van Der Graaf 'Vital' (1978)
ELP 'Works Vol 1' (1977)
Pink Floyd 'Animals' (1977)
Rush 'Moving Pictures' (1981)

I'd give a shout for 'Red' by King Crimson. Simply because it's got 'Starless' on - 'nuff said. :)

I like all of the albums listed and would go for Moving Pictures as it is the latest. My favourite is Wind and Wuthering which is my favourite Genesis album. Prefer Collins voice to Gabriel's. They took a nose dive when Hacket left, although And then there were three is very good.

Thinking about Steve Hackett. He left Genesis partly because they had rejected some material that later appeared on his magnificent 'Please Don't Touch' (1978) - too difficult, apparently.

A definite contender for the above list is 1979's 'Spectral Mornings' which is, quite simply, stunning.

Difficult to exclude Steven Wilson as he is so much a part of the contemporary Prog scene. And 'Hand Cannot Erase' is a truly great disc.

Looks like I'll have to introduce 2 categories:

1) Last Great Prog Album - Classic 70's period
2) Last Great Prog Album - Thereafter

and in the second category I nominate 'A Scarcity of Miracles' (2011) by Jaksyk, Fripp and Collins (effectively forming the basis for the current incarnation of King Crimson)

Post 70s a heavier form of prog emerged. I am thinking of bands such as Dream Theatre. Iron Maiden have gone down this road this century and dabbled in the 80s. Steve Harris was a fan of 70s prog.

Opeth & Anathema both began as doom metal bands but have developed into intense Prog styles.
