So then cocksuckers. Wot was the first prog lp?

Unread post by Mississippi Blind Child Assburn »

Blind Chile gonna lay the timeline all down for you here.
And then you can pick which one suits you.

Here is the breakdown. The "prog" lps that predated King Crimson first lp.

But first let me emphasize that none of this is important. Just because one band got the "first" lp out one month earlier than the other means little.
BUT IT IS GOOD TO ARGUE OVER ON A MUSIC DISCUSSION FORUM!

Things were in flux bigtime at the end of the 60s. Because we are talking mere months difference between bands, they might as well overlap -the second in line could have just as easily been the first.

Also I should add that, when you look into this, the internet confuses things by giving conflicting dates sometimes. "Recorded/produced" first date of lp is very different from actual "release" date. There is much mis-info on dates out there. And don't take MY dates as the gospel truth either. In some cases - like The Nice - dating the first release of band's lp can be difficult. You get contrary dates.

In my dates I am going , where possible , by press releases.

These are LP RELEASE dates.

So then, we have "Court of the Crimson King" (which most agree is the first clear-cut, ALL WAY THROUGH , prog release - even though "I talk to the wind" sorta sticks out as non-prog. But that may well be just splitting hairs.) Release date: Oct 10, 1969.

Let us look then at other contenders:

PINK FLOYD "Piper at Gates of Dawn" Aug '67

MOODY BLUES "days of Future Passed" Nov '67

HAPHASH AND THE COLOURED COAT Featuring the Human Host...." nov '67 (exceptionally strange "progressive" lp for this time)

ART "Supernatural Fairy Tales" Dec '67

VANILLA FUDGE "Renaissance" June '68

FAMILY "Music In A Doll's house" July 19 '68

THE NICE "Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack" July '68

MOODY BLUES 'in Search of the Lost Chord" July '68

THE NICE "Ars Longa Vita Brevis" Nov '68

TOUCH - SAME (I haven't found exact date. They recorded 67-68, lp released in '68. The only non-UK band here.)

VAN DER GRAFF GENERATOR "Aerosol Grey Machine" Jan '69 (some say Sept '69 ) first release was German, not UK

PROCOL HARUM "Shine on Brightly" Feb '69 (some say Sept '68

CLOUDS "Scrapbook" Aug '69

RARE BIRD - SAME Dec '69

RENAISSANCE -SAME Dec '69

What about :

Spirit 'The Family That Plays Together' (1968)
Caravan 'Caravan' (1969)
Soft Machine 'The Soft Machine' (1968)
The Flock 'The Flock' (1969)
Genesis 'From Genesis To Revelation' (1969)
Jefferson Airplane 'Surrealistic Pillow' (1968)

But this specific topic has been hammered to death.
What would be more interesting is:

What - according to the Prog purists - is the LAST Prog album that was recorded?

Discuss.

Missi is WRONG! 😊

Nigel: how can I be wrong when I have not yet given an opinion?
Yes, the Nice is a good likelyhood, but I'm giving it to Family.

........
Fret:
Spirit 'The Family That Plays Together' (1968)
Frankly, I don't know this one. But when suggesting Spirit, they always point to "12 Dreams...."

Caravan 'Caravan' (1969)
You know, you might have something here. Maybe should add it to the list.

Soft Machine 'The Soft Machine' (1968)
Nope.

The Flock 'The Flock' (1969)
horn rock, albiet more complex than most. Nope

Genesis 'From Genesis To Revelation' (1969)

too late,( but good to see added on my list)

Jefferson Airplane 'Surrealistic Pillow' (1968) no way

...........

LAST Prog album that was recorded?
This is just silly.
More prog is being recorded NOW than ever was in the 70s.

About the lp by TOUCH:
This was released in UK a few months after the orig US release (and with a larger-size foldout).
This means it could very well have influenced the earliest UK bands.

This coud mean AMERICA was the start of prog proper.
(I already stated how Moody Blues were influenced by Zodiac lp)

Also - Im not sure here but I think Steve Miller was American, no? Of the first three Steve Miller Band lps, none are clearly prog throughout. But if you picked the proggish tracks off those three and put them to one lp, THAT could be the genesis right there.

Maybe Blind Chile should say a few words about this Zodiac "Cosmic Sounds" lp.

Released May 1967 on Elektra label , music written by Mort Garson.
Other "famous" session men" (not given credit) were Hal Blaine and Emil Richards (who had worked with Zappa).
And the task of Moog was given to none other than Paul Beaver of Beaver & Krause who had a moog demonstration booth at Woodstock - or was it Monteray.

I have both mono & stereo lps. But would be nce to own a UK press. (Anyone know if the UK press was laminated?)

Missi, I was referring to your opening post regarding The Nice
"The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack" You had it down as being released in July 1968. I always thought it was 1967. Wiki seems to agree.

Nigel:

to quote my opening post:" In some cases - like The Nice - dating the first release of band's lp can be difficult. You get contrary dates.'

Marmalade Skies gives it the date of july '68
Rate Your Music also dates it '68, but a different month.

Now, I went to look up my personal mono UK copy and it is 1967. So looks like you are correct.

(Band formed in May '67)

Ok. I was only being pedantic 😊

Incidentally, there is a British book on The Nice written by Martyn Hanson. He gave me a credit in the many thanks category. Probably my most prog moment!
