Emerson invented prog, with The Nice.

Beefwhore The Nice, Emerson was in back-up band for P.P.Arnold at the same Marquis venue as was the band - which I have yet to have named - were playing.
So it is most likely Emerson seen them perform. The keysman was doing the shake the Hammond thing to get the reverb-coil effect that was signature for Emerson in The Nice....later on.

Also there was this organist, Don Shinn, doing showman-stuff:funny spoons things and the knives in Hammond and tuning Hammond with screwdriver whilst playing...which Emerson was later to copy.

Don Shinn released two lps in '69.(The debut lp, "Takes a Trip" , was released March '69)

The first the Nice lp was released in '67.

Interesting to note that The Nice's drummer , Brian Davison, came out of Don Shinn's trio!

Don Shinn (born Donald Shinn, 15 December 1945, Southampton, Hampshire) is an English keyboard player, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and vocalist. He is known primarily as an organist and pianist, and also plays vibraphone. In the early-mid 1960’s he recorded and performed with British Beat groups The MeddyEVILS, The Echoes (backing Dusty Springfield), and The Soul Agents (featuring Rod Stewart). In 1967 he formed his own band The Shinn, which also featured future Uriah Heep bassist Paul Newton, future drummer for The Nice, Brian Davison, and vocalist Eddie Lamb. In 1969 he released two instrumental albums, ‘Departures’, and ‘Temples With Prophets’ (aka 'Don Shinn Takes A Trip'). You are correct.
I stated earlier that it was a performance, not an actual lp.

As early as '66 the band 1-2-3, lead by Ritchie, had a version of Paul Simon's "America" . This was TWO YEARS beefwhore the Bookends lp was released.
'67 they done it live at the Marque.
And it is distinctly prog...or at the very least, rudimentary prog.
