I go along with this. Saw a clip from the Old Grey Whistle test where she belts it out with V J.

Cheers wii, i will give that one a go. Growing up in the late 70's i too remember crap variety show performances from all sorts of artists. Wouldn't want to associate myself with that but all the female singers mentioned here are good at what they do. Maybe me coming out of the wood work and admitting to liking stuff is an age thing, i'm the wrong side of 40 after all.

My mum used to play all sorts- must raid her collection

I owe my love of music to my Mum. She always had the radio or the record player going when I was a kid. My interest in hifi comes from her father.

Nothing wrong with a bit of SB. If you like it, it’s good. Thanks to Mum I’m a bit of a Dusty Springfield fan.

I first heard Elkie Brooks with a band named Dada, a jazz-rock band. Great voice. Did you know her brother was the drummer with Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas?

This is Elkie's first ever recording, at age 18 or 19, covering an Etta James song. It was produced by Ian Samwell and 'probably' features Jimmy Page on guitar.

If you want to talk "uncool" my old band covered The Beatles' '8 Days a Week'...a speeded-up version of the first section of Alma Cogan's treatment. It swung like a good 'un but was quite embarrassing when people asked where we got the idea from. We mostly blamed John, one of our guitarists, for finding it.
