KAYAK - SEVENTEEN

Remember I said the latest YES cd sucks cos its verbose, melody-driven, and simple lite-prog?

Well so is this Kayak cd.

But the difference is that the Kayak is prog-lite DONE RIGHT.

They have not done anything too decent for a long whiles but this is top-form Kayak. Truely excellent. Very much the Kayak of old - this band never changed. And that can be a good thing.

Not cringe-worthy lyrics either (like in that fuckin' YES thing.)

The only bone of contention I have with Seventeen is some pig (pick) squeal guitar.

This guitar stunt wasn't tiresome in the beginning with Buchanan and Van Halen, but now, for decades, its all through prog and showing no sign of letting go. And I'm not just talking about garbage metal-"prog".

Yeah...fook the pigsqueal.

Fret, thanks for the heads-up on YES "Talk".

Its deffo more commercialized , culminating with the worse track - the clearly radio-friendly "Walls" (written in part by an ex-Supertramper).
Also its moving away from keyboards and a bit metal in places - all things i don't much like but...give this release an open-mind and it REALLY IS QUITE STRONG.
Anderson's vocals shine.

I never heard this lp beefwhore cos was put off by the Trevor (and the terrible plain coverart!) ,but, Blind Child must admit, Trevor does a wonderful job in Howe's absence.

................

I also gave that Asia lp a try and the other one you recommended. Sorry. Shit.

According to Discogs, 'Talk' did get a vinyl release in 1994.

I 'm currently tracking down some of the later Yes live albums. Especially those with Billy Sherwood who is injecting new energy into the old dinosaur.
