They were the first given that stamp. Atmospheric flows and pshuuuhs were there before a lot especially in Krautrock.

"People of Spaceship Earth - Your captain is dead!"
Or summat
I can't help it, I liked 'In Search Of Space' despite the shit recording!

Re: Did Hawkwind create SPACEROCK?
Oh I remember now... Sorry for leaving the middle part of the 'people of spaceship Earth' statement out but I don't have the LP to hand...
Bit of useless info to add - A synth 'hero' of mine has been pretty much a member of the band for decades now and apparently helped them get started long before at the very beginning - Tim Blake (who spent time in early Gong too)..
Pink Floyd may have started out as 'spacey' or 'spaced out' more like, but as the 60's became the 70's and Syd went off, they kind of changed into something else (after 'Echoes' certainly). DSOTM changed it for them forever I think.

Re: Did Hawkwind create SPACEROCK?
When talking early spacerock, peeps most exclusively are thinking UK or Germany.
But one of the earliest is US and relatively unknown to the general public. The lp "Lost in The Cosmic Void" by American group, Pi Corp.
NOW you know the power of a PROGMASTERMAN.
