A triptych is a painting or drawing divided up into three panels an example would be Hieronymus Bosch 'Garden Of Earthly Delights'. The panel opened up would represent one of these sleeves opened up but that is were the similarity stops really.

I knew that, and a lot of Russian religious iconography is in triptych format too, that's why I've always assumed the term was correct when used on these double fold-out covers. I've even heard it (wrongly apparently) used to describe Brain Salad...

So what's the "proper" name for these then? I really can't see Manticore advertising "The new album from Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, in a special piss-flaps sleeve." :lol:
