Come on, we ALL know this record. the album that lifted Yes from ho-hum art-rockers to a major, innovative band on the worldwide stage.

Well you haven't really heard it until you've been exposed to the Steven Wilson remixed version. Crisp, clear, every instrument sounding as if it was recorded yesterday (ha!) with Squire's bass doing crunchy subsonic things and Bruford becoming the genius he would develop into. Steve Howe - his debut in Yes - is displayed in full glory and Tony Kaye should get more respect for his pristine organ-work. Hell, even Jon Anderson sounds good on this release.

If you like Yes then you should get hold of these discs - they really are the ultimate.

Next up, their crowning moment: 'Close To The Edge'.

Yes 'Close To The Edge' - 2013 Steven Wilson remix

Image

info and audio clips here: http://yesworld.com/2013/08/close-to-th ... nd-stereo/

This intricate and complex album is, quite rightly, regarded as a pinnacle of early 70's rock - and over the decades much has been said about it. So the only comment I can make is the new mixes from the original multitrack studio tapes are of incredible clarity and depth, giving the listener a fresh insight into the technical abilities and musicianship of all involved. And the 24bit 96KHz DVDA versions have a HQ resolution that is just sublime.

On holiday this summer I ended up listening to a lot of Yes and their musical opposites Joy Division / New Order. Recently I have acquired several of the the latter's albums in remastered form and these have also proved to be a fresh introduction into the Manchester outfit's work and development.

Image

Firstly we have 'Movement', very much a continuation of the Joy Division style with the remaining trio struggling to find their way and still under the musical guidance of producer Martin Hannett. The album is subdued, moody with occasional glimmers of hope. In contrast, the extra disc here contains the blinding lights of a couple of stunning singles: 'Ceremony' (a JD song), 'Temptation', 'Everything's Gone Green' and the mighty 'Procession'. Where a growing interest in electronics and dance beats is revealed.
New Order - Procession

Then there was 'Blue Monday'. A new sound. A revelation. Totally unlike anything else. A defining moment in 80's music.
New Order Blue Monday

Followed by the self-produced album 'Power, Corruption and Lies'. New Order had found their feet and their direction. Synths! Drum machines! Dancefloor beats! But I could never really get to grips with this album - until now. Something about the old CD releases, they were muddy and the music was cloudy and vague. Now the sound is alive, edgy, kicking with the enthusiasm of a band reborn.

Odd details in the music are also shown up in sharp relief - like a totally out-of-tune synth/flute line about halfway through 'We All Stand' (track 2). Which contributes to that songs mood of displacement and uncertainty.

Then there is 'Low Life' a big, swaggering, confident ROCK album. New Order had finally become a major act with world tours and million-sellers.
Not bad for a bunch of scruffy lads from the Northern wastelands. :character-beavisbutthead:

I'm sure sensitive remixes aka the Steve Wilson ones can be a wonderful thing if the original multi-tracks are available, but what's got me lately is how good even very early (mid 80's) CD transfers can sound these days. This week, it's a couple of Elton John albums, 'Captain Fantastic' on original CD release disc and the remastered 'Blue Moves.' I'm SURE I'm hearing musical subtleties in the mixes and overall excellence in the playing I never fully appreciated before and I'm listening on way less than 'exalted' gear as well - hmm..... (These serial box swappers just don't 'get it' I fear ;) and I know I don't get them either)
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

You cannot just sweep it all en masse under the carpet and declare ALL Genesis, cocksucker.
You have to state WHICH Genesis. Go to SOME effort in your posts, will you?

......

Orig "Foxtrot" sounds like recorded in Sammy's butthole, but the Definitive Remaster cd of over a decade ago sounds fine.

Besides this is all moot since The Permed One pedagogue-ingly maintains that:

And I doubt He will change much from his stand of the past few years.

Nice post Fretless. Saw New Order 3 times twice magnificent and once awful. They could be like that. Once at the famous Glasgow Barrowlands they were supported by an unknown band who were absolutely terrible and were booed off. That band were the Happy Mondays.

Been kicking myself for decades that I didn't go with some friends to see one of Joy Division's very last concerts at the Ajanta Cinema in Derby.

Terrible venue but it had great concerts.

Putting fear beside him, he trusts in beauty blind
He slips into the nectar, leaving his shredded clothes behind
"With their tongues, they test, taste and judge all that is mine
They move in a series of caresses
That glide up and down my spine

As they nibble the fruit of my flesh, I feel no pain
Only a magic that a name would stain
With the first drop of my blood in their veins
Their faces are convulsed in mortal pains
The fairest cries, "We all have loved you Rael"
