1974? Interesting point of view. I always considered the end of prog to be the end of Awaken. 1977. When one thinks of the major bands though, 1974 was the beginning of the end.

I do yawn my way thru 1973 actually.

1969-1972 are the Proper prog years.

Prog is still alive and well. Listen to the likes of Steve Wilson or Riverside.

Different. Steve Wilson is enormously influenced by the original Prog era - and has made a career in updating the old recordings to modern remix/remaster technology.

His own music has roots in that but is still new, individual and distinct enough not to be called a copy.

Or Tesseract. Could loosely be termed Prog-metal but are very much a contemporary and unique-sounding outfit.

Times change and music grows.

The golden age of prog was the early 70s. It has diversified a lot since and boundaries are blurred. Bands such as Rush and Dream Theatre took it in a heavier direction. Now it can be said that artists as diverse as Iron Maiden and Kate Bush fall under the prog umbrella. Steve Harris has acknowledged the influence of early Genesis on him.

How can something that not longer existed by the late 70's still be alive and well. Call this new fangled imitation what you want but please dont ever associate it with real prog from the early 70's Does not sound anything like it, the musicians do not play music in the same way.. Just cos they have long hair & try their very best at purposely using odd Time changes does not equate to it being Prog
