Carrying on from Kate Bush thread, from the same era possibly the only other female artist i'd put on the same platform as Kate.

Re: Tori Amos
Certainly up there and she tours regularly and produces an album every few years. A major difference from KB. First 3 albums excellent than a bit patchy from there on. She also did an interesting Classical music album a few years ago. She has a new album out next month. Probably another 10 years for another from KB.
Best albums.
Little Earthquakes.
Under The Pink.
Boys For Pele.
Scarlet's Walk.
Night Of hunters is the Classical piece. There is a great CD box set covering much of her career 'A Piano'. Also check out her superb covers which mainly are found as B sides on the early singles. Also a covers album 'Strange Little Girls' which is a bit of a mixed bag.

Re: Tori Amos
Have a couple of albums from Tori - but never really liked her style (up to now)
I was more a fan of Sarah Mclachlan. And especially the album 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy'
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1993 album) by Sarah McLachlan
'Touch', 'Solace' and 'Surfacing' are also well worth a listen.
And what about Jane Siberry (awesome) and Rosie Vela ?

Re: Tori Amos
Like the early Tori stuff very much.
My 'maximum points', though, go to Natalie Merchant. Intelligent, articulate, distinctive. When she sings, the hairs on my arms and neck stand to attention...

Brilliant But Overlooked Female Vocalists:
Part 38 - Kim Carnes
Kim Carnes (Mistaken Identity 1981) HQ
I had a cassette copy of 'Mistaken Identity' as a student and played it to death. An intoxicating mix of raunchy Country Rock, soft Jazzy ballads and atmospheric Synth-Pop all topped with the creamy, husky voice of blonde goddess Kim Carnes. She had one enormous hit with 'Bette Davis Eyes' and never really got any further. A pity as she produced some excellent albums afterwards like the follow-up 'Voyeur'
Kim Carnes - Voyeur [1982 full album]
Several of her albums have been reissued as LP-copy vinyl-style CD's with card sleeves and high-quality remastering. Worth checking out as examples of excellent 80's productions.
And she'll tease you, she'll unease you
All the better just to please you
She's precocious, and she knows just what it
Takes to make a pro blush
All the boys think she's a spy, she's got Bette Davis eyes

Re: Tori Amos
Guilty, never got beyond 'Bette Davis Eyes', will check her offerings.
Ben checking out the recco's, am not sure about Night of Hunters',will probably grow on me.
Edit: Had a listen to Kim Carnes link, nice album, very 80's synth work.
