I like all the previously noted ladies especially Natalie Merchant both with 10,000 maniacs and solo.

Would add the following as worth a listen

First aid Kit (Scandinavian sisters)

Liy and Madeleine (American sister)

Smoke Fairies ( just brilliant)

Not solo artists but all ladies and regular visitors to my turntable.

Hmm... Smoke Fairies - well that was a new name to me, but love that haunting, country-fied vibe they have which isn't far off the Willard Grant Conspiracy. And one of the voices reminds me of someone else too - but can't quite pull a name out just yet. It'll come.

Long before Lana Del Rey stole my heart - another glamorous photo-model with musical aspirations made an attempt to crack the charts. Rosie Vela managed to put out only one album - but what a release it was, reuniting Steely Dan's Becker and Fagen, who had sworn never to work together again. 'ZAZU' is a cool and sultry breeze that will sweep you away to a place you may not want to come back from ...

Slightly less glamorous than Lana Del Rey - but probably better in the lyrics department, we have (enter stage left) from Canada, Jane Siberry.

Jane's brand of superior art-rock is best heard on the albums 'No Borders Here', 'The Speckless Sky' and 'The Walking' and she almost had a hit (somewhere) with the song 'Mimi On The Beach'.

However she could have been a contender for Kate Bush's crown as the Queen of Whimsy with the album 'The Walking' which is simply stunning. Here's a track.

This lady has a gift for quirky and intriguing songs which grab you after a few listens and lodge themselves into your subconscious. One of the best is 'You Don't Need', this one just leaves you gasping. So good.

Okay - just one more (then I'll stop, for now, promise)

Holland has its own answer to Kate Bush in the (diminutive) shape of Laura Jansen.
Laura Jansen - Queen Of Elba [Music Video]
Laura Jansen - Golden
Lovely tracks from her surprisingly pleasant album 'Elba' - check it out !

Thanks Frettie, know of Jane S. but not Laura J., some more to dig around.

I can see why 'mimi on the beach' was almost a hit, shallow cheesy lyrics or what?,
sorry no way on that performance does she measure up to Kate,
her deeper thoughtful song writing and song craft is on a different plane, only Tori and Joni has the same attributes.

Lana glamourous !!!, no....she's filthy, filthy.....filthy and only one subject in her songs.
Frank...made me do it.
