In the early 80's Kate collaborated with both Roy Harper and Peter Gabriel. She can be heard on Gabriel III doing backing vocals on 'Games Without Frontiers' and filled the duet role on So's 'Don't Give Up'. I was in Wembley Arena for PG's 'So' tour and when the band begun the intro for 'Don't Give Up' you could feel everybody wondering 'who is going to sing?' Then Kate appeared in a single spotlight and the whole arena filled with this huge roar of emotion - still sends shivers down my spine!

Mutual friend Dave Gilmour introduced Roy Harper to Kate and he helped out on 'Breathing' from 'Never For Ever', she then appeared on his excellent album 'The Unknown Soldier'.

Oh and Thomas Dolby - the man is a genius.

Fans should check out 'The Sole Inhabitant' live album. Try to get the version with the DVD where he explains his one-man synth rig.

Image

After 'The Flat Earth' he was asked to work with 2 of his own idols: David Bowie and Joni Mitchell. He can be spotted running the keyboards for Bowie's Live Aid set and did a lot of work for Joni on the synth-heavy 'Dog Eat Dog' album. Somewhere I might still have a copy of his (very) early single of 'The Jungle Line' (as Low Noise).

More pop trivia:

"Video Killed the Radio Star" is a song written by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Woolley in 1978. It was first recorded by Bruce Woolley and The Camera Club (with Thomas Dolby on keyboards) for their album English Garden, and later by British group the Buggles, consisting of Horn and Downes.

From Wikipedia

Foreigner - Waiting for a Girl Like You [Lyrics]

... and Foreigner's classic MOR anthem wouldn't be the same without TD's synths. He cropped up everywhere as a session man for a while - even with pop-punk group Girls at Our Best on their gloriously sparkly 'Pleasure' LP.

BUT, music lovers, if you like both Thomas Dolby AND Kate Bush then you MUST give a listen to the works of Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin. Here doing the Dolby song 'Leipzig'.

Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin-Leipzig

There are two albums: 'Broken Records' and 'As Far As Dreams Can Go', which are as close to 80's pop perfection as you can get.
Right, I'm off to listen to 'The Golden Age of Wireless' for the hundred millionth time.

'Through the Airwaves,
People never read the airwaves ...'

I like threads like this, it makes revisit you artist/bands that you've not touched in a long while and some snippets of said artist contributions is interesting, thanks. :banana-blonde:

Edit: Just had a listen and really liking that Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin track,
got the Kraftwerk'esq rigid synth work and Barbara's vocals brings the soundscape to life.

Edit 2: this is very welcome as i am recovering from my eye operation, thanks everyone. 8-)

Dave Stewart was part of the very first band that I ever saw live in 1971. He was playing keyboards in Egg who were the support act for The Groundhogs. Quite an acquired taste Egg, very prog. Me and my mates thought they were still warming up when they finished their first song and people around us started clapping.

One of the very first LP's I ever heard, when I started to discover music for myself, was National Health's 'Of Queues and Cures', Dave Stewart's band after Hatfield & the North. A weird and wonderful record - but it left me with the expectation that ALL Rock bands sounded like this and I was very surprised when they didn't !! :o

(Explains a lot about my eccentric taste in music, I suppose.)

To be fair I was only 15 and it was very new, and very overwhelming. I'd never been in Manchester Free Trade Hall before and it was just full of all these hairy guys with strange smells around (um, I wonder what that was  ). Anyway it was The Groundhogs we'd gone to see and they were fantastic, I still play their stuff to this day when the mood takes me. Never bought any Egg mind
