The one I really enjoy is the classic "Kind of Blue". Try and get the remastered version. There's also a compilation "The real Miles Davis". 3CDs but I don't remember how much it cost. Might be a good way to get lots of music for not to many pennies?

Hope this helps?

PS Just checked Amazon and there are even larger compilations of early material (20 LPs on CD for under £20.00). Go and delve. You may surprise yourself by how much \ little you spend. 8-)

If you like 'In a Silent Way' then try 'Bitches Brew' which is a similar stream-of-consciousnessness sounds and a lot more intense.
'Kind Of Blue' is THE classic Davis record which you just have to have.
'Tutu' brilliant atmospheric Jazz-rock
'Round About Midnight' with a larger group, groundbreaking.
'Sketches of Spain' with Gil Evans amazing arrangements of the Concertio de Aranjuez.

Then go for Gil Evans and John Coltrane.

Edit: The group Weather Report formed from the musicians who worked with Davis around the time of IASW - so the first couple of albums (with Miroslav Vitous on bass) are in a similar, moody style.

Got Tutu and it was a classic CD-Esque production. O haven't played it for years though, so shall have to give it another spin to see how more modern digital playback gear tames the excesses.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

Yes, Kind of Blue is the obvious recommendation for a Miles Davis album, it is a classic.

I see a few mentions of Sketches of Spain which is ok in my opinion, I prefer Miles Ahead and Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (a French film soundtrack). My favourite Miles track is Teo from Someday My Prince will come album.

I also really enjoy his versions of Human Nature and Time After Time even though they are a bit smooth jazz in style, they are available on the CD Mellow Miles.

None of these are from the same period as In A Silent way though. I could never really get into Bitches Brew as a whole album but I do like Spanish Key from it.
Main System. Amp - Luxman LV-120, CD - Pioneer PDX505 & Hitachi DA 401. Turntable - Trio KD-2055/Denon DL-110 & Ortofon VMS20E. Cassette Deck - JVC KD A55. Speakers - Arcam Alpha connected with NVA LS3.

Headphone System - Little Dot Mkiii headphone amp, various vintage CD players into NVA P50 with Sennheiser HD600 and Beyer DT 880

Albums like 'Live Evil' 'Agharta' or 'Dark Magus' are pretty extreme. Made in his heavy heroin addiction period.
