It's time to stop this dreaming, must rejoin the real world
As revealed by orange lights and a smoky atmosphere.

Beware the fisherman who's casting out his line
Into a dried up river bed,
But don't try to tell him 'cos he won't believe you.
Throw some bread to the ducks instead, it's easier that way.
I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.

The trees and I are shaken by the same wind but whereas
The trees will lose their withered leaves,
I just can't seem to let them loose.
And they can't refresh me those hot winds of the south.
I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.

A song by Tony Banks (not a drummer) who also wrote the following:

Woke up in the morning staggered out of bed
Thought about getting back again, but went downstairs instead
Read the daily paper have to know the truth
Slammed the door as I ran outside, looked at my watch and cried
Gotta get to work on time
Gotta get to work on time

Then the sky turned a deeper blue
Not a cloud as the sun shone through
But all around rain kept falling to the ground
The wind was blowing but the trees didn't make a sound
Just another alien afternoon
Just another alien afternoon

Bit of an alien fixation somewhere.

I want to tell you all about a young man
He'll be known as Dan
Then he was living down in san diego
Drove an ice-cream van
One night he met a girl in club alamo
But she was strictly incognito

They had a drink and when he asked her name
She told him jennifer
But what he didn't realize as he was
Dancing close to her
He held the body of a waitress called kaye
Who used to live in sacramento
They danced right through the night and into the day
Remaining strictly incognito

He drove her home in the sunlight of morning
He held her close in the car
But fourteen year old sara lee was watching
She knew he'd gone much too far

Poor Dan a simple man he just failed to see
It wasn't jennifer who kissed him
Cos when dan took her hand he held sara lee
She knew that she could convict him

So Dan got ten years to dream in state detention
And lost the use of his car
And all because his waitress kaye forgot to mention
It's not always clear who we are

Now she's waiting tables in paloma
Near the four-o-five
And there's another twenty-eight personas
Keeping her alive
Next time your waitress looks you right in the eye
You'd better exercise your veto
And keep your mind right on that blueberry pie
Remaining strictly incognito

Interesting comparing that first Tony Banks lyric with The Beatles' A Day In The Life...
Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream.

Tony Banks death bed regret will be his solo career ;) But he will be deeply consoled having been a member of Genesis. It's a bittersweet symphony that's life.

That thought crossed my mind too - surely more than coincidence?
I think I might be in the HiFi trade.
I am not currently seeking treatment for this.

From this interview - looks like Mr Banks was heavily influenced by The Beatles.

"That's when I started picking up songs off the radio by ear, Beatles songs and things like that. I found this much more entertaining, and so didn't concentrate on the classical side of things at all."

Yes I know, three months late to the party, but I don't come this way very often.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Robert Wyatt.
Also, check out Martin Lamble (A Sailor's Life is exquisite), and Steve Sheehan in the Hadouk Trio.

Stephen Morris Joy Division and New Order. Keeps time like a Swiss Watch and his unique style went along way in defining each bands sound. Two magnificent bands I might add.
