Is It Folk, Bluegrass, or Americana?

Unread post by Neonknight »

I came across this artist at the second hand record store a couple of months ago. Artist is Norman Blake, still playing today but his definitive stuff is as early as the 70's. Over the years he has toured or played with June Carter, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Nancy Blake and a few others. As I understand it, his playing was prominently displayed in the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

I bought two albums from him. Back Home in Sulfur Springs and Whiskey Before Breakfast. I really liked this track. Church Street Blues. It has no video, and its definitely Bluegrass. But someone besides me might like it. He is a decent flat picker though.

Great bit of picking. I like this version, by a favourite guitarist of mine, Tony Rice.

Doesn't really matter what you call it, Americana, Folk, Bluegrass, Roots Music, Old Time... it's just bloody good music if you like it and bloody rubbish if you don't.

Ah yes Tony Rice, yes I know him too, he has played duets with Norman Blake.

Another interesting artist is John Prine. His voice seems to be an acquired taste, kind of like that derelict Tom Waits.

But he is a fine song writer. I came across this live version of Angel of Montgomery by Bonnie Raitt and Rickie Lee Jones. Thought it was a good rendition.

I became a John Prine fan when I heard "Sam Stone" for the first time on an Atlantic sampler album, back in the seventies. I even played it a few times at local folk clubs. Loudon Wainwright III had a track on the same sampler if memory serves.
