Classical Recommendations

Unread post by selby »

I'm fairly new to classical and tend to just listen to the same pieces again and again so looking for some suggestions...

Below are a list of pieces I enjoy so looking for similar in style I guess...

Goldberg Variations BWV988 Aria (Glenn Gould plays Bach)
Pavane Op.50 - Faure
Requiem Op.48 IV Pie Jesu
Vide Cor Meum (this is just from Hannibal the film)
Stabat Mater - Karl Jenkins (always loved this and even more so after see Karl Jenkins perform it at Winchester Cathedral, Belinda Sykes was mesmerising)

Seem to really enjoy a lot of the requiems as I find them extremely moving, so any recommendations would be great.

Thanks
J

But I would love a cheeky little AP10, AP20 sort of amp for a bedroom setup...

If you enjoy a good requiem then try Gorecki's Symphony 3 'The Symphony of Sorrowfull Songs', sung by Dawn Upshaw - a work thats touches parts of your soul that you never knew you had.
Also:
Arvo Part 'Te Deum', Durufle Requiem, Purcell 'Funeral Music for Queen Mary'.

Anymore suggestions people? I've got a free night and a date with my new LS6 and Loth-x speakers!

I always recommend Elgar's Cello Concerto. English-ness at it's finest and I'll also put a second vote in for that Górecki recording. Oh, and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and anything by Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, and Eric Whitacre, and...

In love with Gorecki's Symphony 3

Now to listen to the other suggestions...these Loth-x and LS6 are amazing with classical...can't wait to listen again with a decent amplifier.

Slightly odd recommendation here: Alison Moyet's 'The Voice' Album. She is a classically training singer and there are two or three 'Classic' tracks on the album (plus Jazz and Folk standards, so lots of bases covered if you like it.)

Edit - forgot to mention another reason for recommending this album - produced by Anne Dudley (Art of Noise and lots of other stuff).

I know what I know with 'classical' music, and it's not very much...

Berlioz Requiem?
Vaughan Williams 6th and The Lark Ascending (I grew up on the Boult versions)
Mahler (old recordings now, but Karajan for the quieter stuff and Solti for when it gets going). Ruckertleider is sublime (I started with the Karajan/Ludvig recordings, but then heard the earlier? Fischer Dieskau interpretation - I want "I have become A Stranger To The World" read at my funeral - there's a particular translation that's incredible.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

I'm with you on Vaughan-Williams. They can play Lark Ascending at my funeral as well (followed by Joy Division's ' Love Will Tear Us Apart').

His 'Variations on a theme by Thomas Tallis' is another very pleasant piece for string orchestra.

You know, anyone interested in orchestral recordings ought to look at the 'pop' stuff like Beethoven. My first conscious purchase was of Beethoven's 6th 'Pastoral' symphony, which can be magical if properly played and recorded (tempo's of this period of work were often too slow and turgid in the early to mid 20th Century, but research has shown that the speed of playing should be a little faster, the music taking on a joyous 'babbling brook' kind of feel for me at any rate.
